Pretty sure they only make them in 2wd. I have a 2001 model and it has been a tank, although it has sat for a few years and now needs some work. The good thing about them is they are light enough that you can lift them if you get stuck.

I looked at these before I got a heck of a deal on a new Yamaha 450 Kodiak. I think they are all wheel drive. Search Google for Honda Recon test drive. You can even include the year you want to know about. Should pull up some reviews with the info you want.

I think all of the recons were 2 wd. I had a 250 ES. Light, nimble but tough and reliable. Just was not stout enough to handle the weight I needed to carry.

For kids cant go wrong with the recon. It will go a lot of places a 4wd can due to its lighter weight. Plus the turning radius is a lot smaller than a 4wd is.
