I did steam bend the stems. They are 3 pieces of 3/4 x 1/4 ash laminated together. First I stem bend both inner and out strips, let them dry then came back and did a glue up of the inner and outer stems separating them with tape. Also they are no ribs in the canoe, it will be fiberglassed and varnished in the end for strength. Here’s a couple pics of the stem bending process

I got the plans from Noah’s marine. Not much to the plans. It’s really not that hard of a project. I’m actually not much of a wood worker myself, it just interested me. Thanks for all the comments, it’s exciting to see the canoe take shape after each piece is glued in. Most plans call for stapling the strips on. Stapling them on allows you to move faster, but I knew I would like all the leftover staple holes in the finished product, so instead I’m just using wood glue.

How do you Seal that ?

I think I am ready for fiber glass. The one picture i wetted the hull down to raise the grain and do a final sand. I am happy with it so far. Also started planning for inwales and gunwales. They will be out of ash with accent walnut for the scuppers.

Wow that is a beauty! At a lodge in Ontario that I once fished, they use 18’ cedar strip boats. They are fun to fish from.

We have a salesman’s sample cedar strip canoe hanging in our living room.
