This southern boy has always wanted to try it. So, tell me about it? Are walleye the main target fish? Do you sleep on the ice in a fishing hut? Thanks, Sarge

You're drunk Sarge. Only sissies sleep in a hut. I just stretch out on the ice.

Right here, yellow perch, bluegill, crappie. Pike is a big deal if you're into that.
The hut is for getting out of the wind and eating sammiches.
I wouldn't even consider spending the night on the ice.
There is one lake here that is crystal clear. It's kinda fun to watch down the hole and see fish work your bait.

You sleep sitting up on a bucket. Have to keep jigging while you nod off and don't drop your beer.

I target walleye early ice on shallow waters, along with perch pike and panfish. When the deep lakes freeze in January it's on to lake trout, burbot, whitefish and cisco and a little smelt fishing.

Some buddies and I had a smelt shack (smelt and whitefish are the only thing I'd fish out of a shack for) on Higgins for a few years before they crashed. We would pick up a neighbor to fish with us at night on the weekends. Without fail, within about 10 minutes of getting to the shack he'd be snoring. We'd wake him up at quitting time and he'd stagger back to the truck and sleep all the way home. He always brought a case of beer tho.

Having a shack would be ideal but here you have to move around to find the fish. And, if you put a shack on the ice, it becomes public property and anybody can use it.

Not drunk, on duty. But could use a good mixed drank right now if i could and then go to bed. I'm exhausted.

Always thought it was interesting to fish on a frozen lake, but sleep on one? i'll give it a try i guess, might be my first and last time though. Sarge

There's a guide service up here that offers sleeper shacks out on Burt Lake. I think it's pretty common in MN too. Set up like a little movable cabin. Could be a fun winter trip for you.

The best thing about telling the ole lady that your going ice fishing is that you can go and do whatever you want...
Your going to come back with whiskey on your breathe and smell like fish regardless...

I've slept on the ice a dozen or so times. Some in my portable ice shanty., some in designated sleepers shacks. It's a great time either way. Fish for everything from perch and bluegill to walleye, whitefish and pike. Even done a few overnighters while trying to spear a sturgeon.

Now that is impressive. Both the fish and house. It is just fascinating to me. I suppose like gator, hog or shark fishing was to me when i grew up in Florida, you just don't think twice or it being different. Sarge

We made our own fold down shanties with runners on the bottom so they pulled easy.
