1986 Nissan, 4 cyl. 2.4

Reinstalling rocker arm shafts. Each shaft has 5 bolts. Each bolt is approximately 3.5 inches long and .3125 diameter. Hex head measures 15/32 across flats. Fine thread but probably metric.

No markings on the bolt head. I need the torque values that I should apply to these bolts.

I have to manual but no values are given. I am guessing somewhere between 20-30 foot pounds

German torque specs....gudentite. (good and tight). In all honesty it probably doesn't mattertter too much, as long as you're even. Do the bolts hold anything else down, like cam caps, or just the rocker shafts.

Google tells me "37-41 N-m or 27-30 ft-lbs, per the FSM page EM-18" for KA24E Rocker Shaft Torque Specs

Just the rocker shafts. There are 5 machined blocks on the bottom side of the assembly that mate with half blocks cast into the head. Camshaft lays in the center of the machined blocks.

I just got done putting together a toyota 4 cylinder with dual overhead cams over the weekend. No rocker arms the cams sit right on the lifters on top the valves. But the bolts are probably the same size for the caps on the cam bearings. Very close any way. The bolts took a 10mm socket. My chilton manual listed the torque at 17 foot pounds

These bolts take a 12mm socket.

They were very tight when I removed them. I had to use a cheater on the breaker bar

Well I tried. Converting foreign measurements to standard has never been my strong suit. I'm glad I mentioned what size socket the bolts took.

After reading Drifter's chart I am trying to decide whether to use inch-pounds, foot-pounds, newton-meters, kilo-pascals, or furlongs per fortnight

Do you have a CALIBRATED torque wrench? Are you sure the solution isn't pushing it into the Kusko? Haha! I would use in. pounds. Start below the torque you decide on and work up to it. Stop before your target if the bolts feel like they might strip or shear. Lastly..........where' Manzy?

Thanks Mike. I have two torque wrenches...neither is calibrated. I had planned on working up in increments. It has been a real frustrating project and not sure yet what the issue is. The river bank looks better all the time !

Manzy is in Nome

Are you torquing into steel or aluminum?

Some of my manuals I had the bolt torques were listed in the front of the book. They listed them by size and not where they were used. 13 MM head I am guessing is about a 8 MM bolt. I am guessing to end up with around 25 ft/lbs wet threads. No oil in the hole as have seen a bolt push the back of a hole on Deutz before.

Yes this was an 8mm bolt. I bit the bullet and torqued them to 25. I DID clean out the bolt holes before starting. Hippie warned me of the dangers there.

Put it all back together and it fired up when I just looked at the key !! No cranking at all. BUT, the problem is still there . Back to the drawing board I guess
