Can anyone identify this old girl. My Dad bought it used in 1988, paid $95 for it. Was told it was a great welder. I want to hook it up but don't know what amp breaker I will need. I have to run power to the barn where it is at and was going to run 60 amp service to barn and use a 50 amp breaker for this beast. Is it worth keeping this old girl? I know it's worth more for scrap then a welder. [Linked Image]

I have no info on this. The front plate is the only plate on the whole thing. It says A.C. Arc Welder 150

Looks like a century by the colors as well as cabinet. Imagine duty cycle is about twice as high as a newer one.

We had machines similar to that when I started at the quarry in 1974 since its dual range and has a continuous contact rectifier its far above what you can buy now meaning your amp adjustment is infinite probably AC high range was for a carbon arc attachment you cut metal with decades ago if it was kept dry and the adjustment wheel is free plug it in

I do have a set of carbon rod holders. I was told they were for brazing.

I'm voting century too.... 50amp breaker is what is on my slight new century arc welder.
If it were me, I'd hook it up, say a prayer and turn it on... you can't beat the older welders.

Its possible the handle should move the rods together when squeezed this creates the "flame" that heats/melts metal as there is no air to blow away the slag results are unimpressive

So no one has seen one like this? I can't find another like it in the web. Maybe I'm not searching correctly. All of them have had the amp adjustment on the front. I think I'm just going to go-ahead and run 4/4/2 the 175 feet to the barn, hook it to a 50 amp breaker and cross my fingers that I don't have a thermo melt down.

Dont worry to much about melting down ,if its bad it will throw the breaker, look on the bright side you will have electric to your barn ,if its bad pick you up another. it dos resemble a GE welder.

That's the plan. I did find one that looks kind of like it. A National Cylinder Gas (NCG) Sureweld. from the 1940's.

Well I got a response on a welding forum and she has been identified as an old Craftsman Welder, mod. 245 20101.

Interesting. I also have an older Sears Craftsman welder. It’s not nearly as old as yours though.

This carbon rod attachment is for brazing. The carbon arc gouge mentioned above, is a different process entirely. It has a compressed air hose to blow away melted steel from the arc. It's used for cutting and backgouging full fusion welds. It is extremely loud and shoots a molten stream for a long distance.
