What are your going rates at your barber? Are your barbers raising prices?

My barber is raising rates from $20 to $25. The $5 increase is a "cleaning fee". I think it is crazy to raise the rate by 25% for a "cleaning fee". Barbers should be sanitary already. They have little overhead and make decent money. I think they are trying to capitalize on an increase of demand because of the shutdown. They already see customers by appointment only and are booked all day before the shutdown.

Before you say it, they weren't the only ones out of work and have bills to be paid. They aren't the only ones who have to clean.

A couple friends said I should start cutting my hair again like I used to. I had to cut my boys hair this past weekend because their mom royally messed it up. I did a good job especially with trimming their long hair.

Have no clue. Been paying $20 ever since I remember. Think she charges $10-15. I pay and half the time my kids go she hardly ever charges them.

My five year old grandson gave me my spring hair cut. Clipper with no guard, burr it off as close as you can and let it grow. There is no way I would pay $20-$25 for hair cut. You can buy a clipper for that.

I can and do use the clippers at home too. But I like to support my local barber and will go there every other time or so.

$8.00.

I got myself a seniors' GPS.
Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination,
it tells me why I wanted to go there.

My barber was at the shop today. Not sure if any bait was getting cut but there were enough vehicles I think maybe.

$0... Have cut my own for years with opposing mirrors, scissors, and a razor.
..Better cut than what the local Barbers provide.

My wife's shop is finally able to open again on Monday. She will be raising prices.

My comments are specific to Minnesota, but, probably typical country wide.

The price increase is justified. Yes, they are already clean, but, now they have to sanitize between each customer. New shop building requirements are in place including different ventilation systems. Booked solid then and now are two different things. Social distancing and 25% occupancy slash income. Add to that additional PPE that slow down the entire process, to say nothing of the comfort/stress levels.

My first inclination was to keep prices the same and bill the difference to Governor Tim Jong Walz, but, decided to save myself that one additional headache.

13 I think. I made my wife cut my hair a few weeks ago. All was going good until she hit the beard. I had no choice but to shave it off. I showed her tho, I have been rocking a sweet mustache since then. My wife hates it, I just said well it's your fault.

I also pay $20. My place has a senior discount and a military vet discount which brings the rate down to $9. I tell the girl to keep searching for discounts because she gets to keep the change.

I can see that if she has to add or upgrade ventilation, that's completely understandable. My barber doesn't have to do that.

What ppe will slow her down?

Barbers and Salons can operate at 25% capacity but how does a barber do that when they have 1 chair? Barbers operate at 100% all day.

Sanitizing equipment doesn't take but a few seconds and is done anyway.

MJM I just ordered clippers last night for $40. There's no way I can keep paying $25 + tip. I'm keeping this appointment this way I can either find a new barber in the meantime.

I went last week and thankful for it. There was a young kid in the other chair I thought looked to be 14-15, had kind of a high voice but during a conversation said he was 28. I thought to myself no way. Well he left and I asked my barber is that guy really 28? I guess so but that was a girl! Getting married to another girl in a week. I'm gettin old. Oh yeah $15.00

12 dollars locally for a haircut and fade in the beard
about every over month I go to the city and pay 20 for a haircut and a proper beard trim.

I could get one for 8 up until last year when the old town barber retired.

I gave the local girl a 50 on friday for a haircut b/c she's been out of work and I've been working overtime.
she does my haircut at lunch or after hours so I dont have to miss any work and has never given me one bit of grief over moving appointments

I bought a $20 Whal clipper 15 years ago and haven't been to the barber since. Not only is it the best ROI you'll ever get, it is WAY more convenient. I can spruce up anytime I want in less than 5 minutes. No appointment necessary.

last cut was in November for a funeral.

now 7 months in my kids are telling me I look like Redneck Jesus so I may just go with it.

before covid it was around 20 and a tip for the girl that cut my hair .

the barber in town retired and cut 2-3 days a week and I had to take time off work to get a cut mid day when he worked was not worth it any more.

the girl does a nice job and has a 1-2 nights a week she works till 7.

I cut my own. Invested in a clippers, was a wise decision.

My wife however.
The place she goes to opened up about a week ago.
Her prices remained approx the same.
I don't know how long that will last tho.
The hairdresser used to work on 2 people at once, now she only can do 1 at a time.
If that keeps up she will have to increase prices cause her income is cut in half.
Lot more kinds of treatments and time required for women's hair I guess.
My wife is there for 2 hours. While when I used to get my hair cut at a barber it was about 10 minutes.

I've cut my own since I got out of the Marine Corps in1956. I do a great job if I do say so myself.

What gets me is fat people can get ice cream at dairy queen but I can't get a hair cut. Explain why ice cream is essential. There is a lot of stuff happening that makes no sense, bars opened. Restaurant opened, pot growers are open but I can't get a hair cut. Maybe if I weighed 300 pounds, smoked dope and hung out at bars I wouldn't care.

Wish I had more time to trap....

I pay $15 and don't tip... he does at least 5 heads an hours. I think $75 an hour is a good salary.

I doubt that’s 5 an hour consistently. Now figure in Rent/Mortgage, Electric/Gas, Insurance, Phone, Liscensing,Taxes, Etc... $75 an hour is not his salary. He makes what he makes on how many haircuts he does. No haircuts means no money.

Ok, I lied!

The wife decided not to raise rates and re-posted her old sign. [Linked Image]
She is a lot more business savy than I. She claims that most everyone is giving a $20 tip.

$14, plus tip. I tip because of my character, not because of his needs. I've done it myself a few times, enough to know I can. I don't mind paying someone else to. There are a lot of things I can do myself but still pay others to. Like eating out, buying food, or working on the car. Sometimes it's worth it.
Now, my haircut takes 10-15 minutes.
My wife spent 4.5 hours at the salon in two sittings this week. Lord knows if she'd learn how to do her own we could save some cash. But it's a treat to her a couple times a year, like a mini vacation.

My guy charges me $11. That's the "senior" rate. He's done the hair cutting for 3 generations of Morse men, and 99% of his shop decor is fish I mounted for him, or a print of one of my paintings I did back in the day. He does the old fashioned cut/neck shave thing with a straight razor. Is there anyplace more iconic than a small- town barbershop? The distilled essence of Americana. Few things are as relaxing as sitting in a barber chair and listening to the banter of retirees that have known one another for literally several decades.

T-Rex that's incredible.
Pasadena, my barber does 2 haircuts in 1 hr. That's $50 hr w/o tips. His shop is owned by him and 2 others so they share costs there's 3 barber's who rent a chair from them. All said and done after expenses they each average $40 hr

J.Morse that's awesome. That reminds me of my old barber. His shop was tiny and he owned it. 2 barber chairs 7 customer chairs. Great times. Barbers here can't use straight razors anymore, because of "covid practices".
