so i go out and put the belt on like i know it goes and instantly know the gremlins are still working-not right.fortunately if you remember i have 2 so i just had to get the other deck.way better than gettin that #$#$$ manual.both decks have the belts on now and greased and after i clean underneath we'll see if the other belts are right.

also-the belt at tractor supply-16 dollars--the belt from jd-100

When I buy a belt, I write what it's for on the sleeve the belt comes in and staple the sleeve to the inside of the door frame to my shop. That's my filing system.

1/2" is an "A" or "4L" cross section. For some reason, to get the part number, you subtract 2" from the length with the A belts and add a zero to the length with 4L belts. A94 or 4L960. I buy mine 4L960 or A94.

I spent 30 plus years in the parts department of the local John Deere dealership and understand your pain. From my perspective the customer usually didn't offer much help in the matter. I would ask what mower do you have? Answer "It's a John Deere" . It helps to know the model and serial number and the deck size and serial number. If the mower was bought at our dealership we will have all that info on file. My best advice is to buy a mower at a dealership rather than a box store and develop a relationship with them. John Deere mowers are no cheaper at Lowe's. There's absolutely no product support and the parts prices are higher at Lowe's by a bunch.

Mower belts are usually not your typical hardware store size. They're not 1/2 x 80 or whatever. They're more likely .550 x 80.33 and have a different angle and depth than a standard belt. The hardware store belt might work but it won't last as long.

Most mowers other than the higher end models have at least 2 belts. A traction drive belt that propels the mower and a deck drive belt. Many have 3 belts . A traction drive belt and a primary and secondary deck belt. It's really not that hard if you know what you got and know what you need and know where to go to get the right belt.
