My great grandpa was a government trapping and I received a ton of his traps and after looking at them I noticed a bunch of his Victor stop loss had rectangular pans. Was this model before the circle pans or after? And what was the reasoning for changing to this? Thanks

In addition to the rectangular pan, there isn’t a cross piece. The “dog” is a wire on the front end of the trap. That makes this trap more compact, easier to carry and the absence of the cross piece means less metal was used to make the trap.

Those square pan stoploss with the wire dog on the front of the trap were nowhere as good as todays round pan stoploss with a regular jaw.
Many of the square pans when set--the pan would not set flat.
I am not sure if there was a round pan before the square pan,but over the years there were several stoploss versions.

Hippie, I can't believe you never saw one. I don't go to many public sales but I have seen them at public sales several times. You also see them at about any convention in the tailgating section. I agree with Bogmaster, I never liked them because many times the pan was way too high when the trap is set.

I got myself a seniors' GPS.
Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination,
it tells me why I wanted to go there.

While the stop loss is my favorite muskrat trap, the square pan sure isn't.
LOL that might be the reason the Duke stop loss doesn't have a square pan and wire dog.

I don't use stoplosses now but did 40 years ago. Always thought the rectangular pan ones were head and shoulders above the newer Victor ones. I liked the Blake and Lamb version better too. The pan shank always seemed to get in the way of the bar or vice versa, The old ones may have had a higher pan but at least they were settable. I thought maybe it was Sleepy Creek that did a reintroduction of the old version?

I'll second that motion.

Besides they don't chew up your waders when setting them over your knees.

And if you ever lost that wire trigger, it is easy to make one out of bicycle spokes in the marsh and you were good to go back at er.

LOL,I never had a bike in the marsh,so spokes were never a replacement option.

I used to have several of those old wire dog stop-loss. I loved them when I started using them back in the day. I still have a couple of them in my man room collection. It was over 50 years when I first set them.

Stainless steel bicycle spokes are the best replacement for lost coni-bear triggers and even shear pins for 2 hp outboards.
What's in your trapping bag Tom, besides coffee mugs and thermoses
