Apparently Canada has the same wasteful, socialism ideas we do...... and wastes as much as we do on subsidizing agriculture. Don’t have a link but just read a story on the millions wasted on propping up the mink farmers in Canada.

US has significant agriculture subsidies, ranch mink or ranch fur is not subsidized. The county USDA offices will have lists of crops subsidized and the platforms for participation. When national disasters are declared then there can be expansions of the programs but mostly low interest loans for the most part.

A fellow retiree has received over 45K from government program in Wisconson for NOT RAISING corn and soybeans. Now I've never NOT RAISED corn, bean, pigs or beef, but am willing to learn.

Maybe I'll start out small at first, NOT RAISING 3-5 pigs, and when I get really proficient at NOT RAISING the 3-5 pigs, work my way up to NOT RAISING some really big numbers.

Is this why the Washington politicians have invested in hobby farms??

CRAZY!

There's a website that you can go to and see what anybody in your state has collected in subsidies. With that being said, once grain is harvested I see thousands of bushels of corn on the ground every spring that has turned black and spoiled because there's no demand for it. While people overseas are dying of starvation. There's something useful the UN could do but no................ Any grain market going overseas is controlled by the Federal Government.

My great grandfather's cash crop was cotton. This was in south Alabama just above Mobile and amounted to just a few bales to buy the items that couldn't be grown on the place. Not a plantation by any means. In his later years he was paid two cotton alloments to not grow cotton. He died in 1943. My grandfather moved off the farm that same year yet still received payment for those two allotments. My father sold those two allotments in 69 to a farmer above Huntsville in the Tennesee Valley needing them so he could plant more acres. The original 20 acre cotton field was harvested for saw timber not ten years later.

The reason corn, soybeans and wheat rot in big piles on the ground is because we import huge amounts of grain. Agriculture is nothing but corruption when you take the guy on the farm/ranch out of the picture.

Personally I think farmers need to be treated like western ranchers. The ranchers have to give public access to their pastures known as blm. Its cheap cheap cheap pasture. A subsidy. So subsidized farmers should have to do the same thing.

They are free to refuse subsidies if they want. I think the people helping to pay the bills should get something out of it instead of inflated retail food costs. No need to be a rocket scientist to see how the food stamp program also inflates retail food prices. I bet Walmart for example would cry a big river if food stamps disappear, and retailers can only charge what people can pay.

Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

What data do you have as to metric tons per year of grain say corn, beans, wheat that are imported each year while we store US commodities? There is one major difference between the BLM grazing land and the subsidized grain farms. The farmers own the land the crops get subsidized on, the federal government owns the BLM land. Food costs in the USA are the lowest as a percentage of consumer expenditures in the developed and non developed world. Also two of the major cost increases in US food is meals eaten out of the home and the convenience and packaging of food for today's life style.

BLM land is not owned by the Ranchers. Its federally owned land. Big difference between that and privately owned land.

If the Gov't wants to give a private land owner money for what ever reason I don't see how that translates into every clown gets to run amok on his land.

This means that mink farmers can produce below production cost, allowing ranch mink to continue to be sold so cheap the unsubsisdized producers of fur go out of business. This basically subsidizes the fur product manufacturers, tanners, etc by supplying thier raw material below market reality. Similar to any other subsidized product. Eventually all producers will become dependant on subsidy to stay in business. Now even businesses are government dependants like those dreaded welfare people.

Sad but true. Subsidies have many farmers voting Democrat and doing very well at it.

As I’ve posted before yes there are subsidies some years. The first two of the new farm bill we got Zero. The last couple we have received enough to almost cover our property taxes. That’s on 10,000 acres!!! One of the reasons that they still exist is because other countries heavily subsidize their farmers and without them most would go broke. Not saying it’s right but that’s the way it is. I despise them because of discussions just like this. Got home at 9pm last night and left at 5:30 this morning and it’s not even harvest. Work 7 days a week all year long except for 4-5 days with the family on vacation. We stay close in case of an emergency at the farm. No holidays, no sick days, no personal days just work rain or shine. Enjoy the cheap food
