sorry the pics are terrible but you should still be able to make them out. made this this evening using a drill press, welder, and a sawzall with a metal blade. 1 1/2 thin walled square tubing. #9 galvanized wire for the strap. a 20 penny nail for the dog. the bolt out the bottom is a 3/8 carriage bolt about 6 inches long. the small hole is for the spring bolt. 3/8. the large hole is 5/8 with a nail tack welded. i flatened both sides of the nail with a hammer and anvil. after bolting the spring on i bent the ends to the approx. angle shown. this takes quite abit of the pressure off. drill 2 holes for the strap as shown. bend the spring arms down and mark them where it meets the holes and bend them in a vise. attach #9 wire to springs by wrapping. this pic shows the trigger and a nail used for the dog. a small piece approx. 14 guage sheet metal is welded to the end off the tubing to attach the dog. i also tack welded a #9 wire, bent to the same size as the tubing, to the end of the tube so i did not have to worry about the sharp end. base plate and chain added. also 3/8 carraige bolt to spear the trap to the ground. in the set position.

got a $1.5 in the spring. the rest is scrap laying around the farm. just wanted to show someone how to build one without special tools.
freeburgtrapper, i think i like the push or pull trigger. not sure why others haven't offered some form of it.

coongrease,
The spring I got looks just like ack's. Mine came from TSC #1415541 Baler Tooth John Deere my spring cost $1.79 plus tax. Looks like several of us will be running our own version of this type of trap this winter. I've got all my parts but have not had time to assemble yet. I think as a owner / maker we should stamp the baseplate with our name or other identifing # on the inside before welding it up. Then if it is stolen we can prove to the warden who's trap it is and prosecute the thief to the fullest extent of the law.
I'm proud to say I have four dozen of the real Lil Griz's to use on properties were theft should not be a problem. Good luck to all.

daniel- good point and one i forgot about the trigger. i drill the hole in the top of the trigger with a drill that is .005 smaller then the dog. after it is drilled i SLOWLY raise and lower the tip of the dog. i go until it is about a 45' angle up and down. this kinda gouges out the corners allowing the dog to pivot off the "stem". the reason i start out with a smaller drill is by the time you raise and lower the trigger while the drill bit is running it will make the original hole slightly larger. i didn't want the trigger to be able to twist. i only want it to rock front and back.
warden- yeah the spring is from tractor supply. if i remember correctly it is for a combine reel. i just picked out the weakest one they had at the time but that also had long legs so i could modify them as i saw fit. i miss typed the original post in that i wanted to say that no special tools are needed.

oh yeah. the spring looks really strong but it really isn't that bad. after bolting it to the tube i shove a small pipe inside the coils and bend the spring to about a 45' angle so it won't be loaded as much when set. no problem squeezing it with one hand.
stamping your name on them is a great idea. i have made some dies so i could stamp out my own #2 double coils. i made 2 dozen the first time. one thing i did was to stamp "ACK" on the pan. real cool to walk up on a big coyote and see it caught in "your" trap!!!!!

the trigger is actually made from an old victor trap jaw. about an 1/8 thick.
i don't think i have to worry about the springs being to weak! as you can see in the second pic. the relaxed position of the spring is quite abit above the "set off" position. when the spring is not modified the arms are perpendicular to the tube.
i have also made some from round tubing but i think the square is easier since you don't have to slot any of the holes.
the 6 inch carraige bolt in the bottom is held with a nut incase i want to remove it.
not shown is how the chain is attached. it is held with an additional swivel.

So on the spring, at the top where you wire on the "Jaw", you just bend them both into squares so that you can run your dog over them? Mink

i cant remember ever agreeing with don on anything but this time i do, make sure there is good tension in the closed position or like any paw trap, big coon can and will back that skinny rubbery foot out of there. really cool idea and great workmanship with common tools, not to mention some real good thinking.

trust me, there was a reason i bent the spring to the angle shown to lesson the amount of pressure! these springs are way to strong in the orginal shape.
yeah pretty much minkmaster. i just bent the ends of the spring so it was close to the holes for the "strap" and then bent them again to make them the same width as the tube. make sure you get the bend close the FIRST time. don't try to straighten them and bend again. without heat they will break. the "foot strap" #9 wire is bent into a u shape so it will slide freely threw the two 3/16 holes.
don't make this a hard project. it is real easy to make one of these. i will try to get a better pick of the trigger this afternoon. it is basically a strap of metal with a hole big enough for a 20 penny nail threw the top and a notch cut in it about a half inch down.

Instead of the push-pull trigger, couldnt you just make a trigger like yours, and put a nock in the side? Just hook it on the side. Just might save a little work if anyone understands what Im talking about. Mink

Yes Daniel it does work.....It is basically a power snare made out of a 110....It the animal pulls against the earth anchor...he is pulling against the spring which is pulling against the foot snare......

looks great but don't you have to replace the cable often? Not often but enough.....You probably could drill two hole and do a wire loop like the real ones...But if I do that Hear, I have to pad the wire (under special trapping permit Laws) SSSssoooooo It is a non strangling type foot snare....

making the trap doesn't take that much time. yeah you could speed the process up by doing multiples. where the time is in assy. just like the springs and foot strap. all of the ones i have made are custoum fit. i'm sure you could cut the time down to about a half hour apiece, no problem. i spent about 1 1/2 hours making this one which included stoping and taking those terrible pics. i painted it and took another pic. shows the idea of the push or pull trigger. really not much more work then another type. basically just the nail welded and the trigger turned 90 degrees.
