I used to, but haven't needed to in quite some time (haven't run low yet, Wolfie!).

Yeah I'm about to start dipping my toes into it. Joined cast boolits to see if i could get a good footing and welllll.. the guys are great and try to be helpful but I feel like I'm in a collage master class listening to some of these advice, pretty overwelming at times lol. Also want to see if Any of y'all had a lee .225 mold and sizing kit I could buy, all the supply house are backed up and I'm a little inpatient lol.

Planning on trying to make some .223's power coating them and using then for my AR nothing super fancy but I am considering do some videos on me bumbling my way though all of this ( not a how to ) since there's not many if them . Figured it be somthing interesting to watch

Wolfdog, get a copy of the Lyman cast bullet handbook-lots of info and load data. I used to cast and load for a couple of .222s but it has been a while.
Bullets need to be fairly hard and gas checked and velocity kept to around 2,000 FPS. I'm sure there are better lubes around these days also. Used to be a cheap way to shoot, not so much anymore.
Dive in and enjoy.

P.S. less than full power loads may not function an autoloader.

When you say powder coat are you talking moly?

no very specifically Harbor Freight Red powder coating , baked on cast boolits and sized

a half inch of the black air soft BBs in about a 3-4 quart #5 recyclable food container two table spoons to get started and then about a table spoon per every 100-150 boolits , about 75 boolits of 9 or 40 and less if bigger with lid on shake vigorously up and down , then using a disposable glove I rub the 3 fingers I use to pick the boolits up in powder coating then pick up and set base down boolits on parchment paper on cookie sheets that go in my small convection oven , 10 minutes at 400 bakes the coating on nicely. let them cool and run through the sizing die the next day no lube the coating ios slipery enough , then load

the 2 different typse of plastic creat a static charge and make the powder cling to the boolits being agitated with the powder and BBs

I can't take any credit for this idea got it form cast boolits http://castboolits.gunloads.com/for...s&s=d594f0464927d643299e5cd0a893e38a

I mostly do 9mm and size .356

when I don't have time I buy Acme HiTech coated boolits http://www.acmebullet.com/bullets-reloading-brass/9MM-Lead-Cast-Reloading-Bullets?product_id=424

I cast about 124 gr and load my own or acme over the same charge of powder notice no difference which I am running

.

Thanks GCP Never heard about that. I’m set up for moly same basic process does a great job on cast as well as jacketed. Higher velocities without higher pressures. Vibratory tumbler some #2 steel shot tablesp of moly and boolets. Cuts down on copper and lead fowling.

I would not recommend starting out with a 224 mold for an AR. Not to say it can't be done but it's not where i would suggest a noob start. If you really want to, a powder coated bullet is the proper starting point. Bullet lube and gas systems just sound like a bad combination to me. Rifle barrel twist would also be a possible issue. AR's tend to have a pretty fast twist which could cause a lead bullet to skid rather than grab. My humble opinion! When I started casting bullets I started with a 41 magnum (lyman 410610) and quickly got a 45 auto mold (Lyman 452460). Now I have lots of different molds. The smallest being a 125 gr .358 RNFP and the largest being a 340 gr .460 RNFP. Whatever you decide to go with don't buy any sizing dies until you slug the bore on whatever gun you decide to go with. I would start with one of groove dia and one .001 larger. Dealing with a revolver you need to know groove dia and all the chamber throat diameters. Throat diameters need to be all the same and very slightly larger than the groove diameter. .001 is good. I would suggest starting out with your 30-06 as opposed to your AR. I think you will find more cast bullet info on the '06.

GCP, I don't bother with the airsoft bb's any more. I bought a small vibratory tumbler with a poly-ethylene bowl (important) and tumble a couple good sized hands full of bullets and a couple tablespoon full of powder for ten to fifteen minutes. Then take a look, if they are coated nicely just dump the whole mess into a wire basket over a container to catch the loose powder, give it a shake. and slide it into the oven. Ten or fifteen minutes and just dump them into a bucket of water which separates them and doesn't affect anything. I don't bother separating them to bake. I am also not keen on the Harbor Freight powder. There are better options.

I know HF red isn't the best or even that good but when I started It was easily available and didn't cost much.
I bought one then 2 or 3 and it goes a long way I haven't run out yet

fatter bullets are easier to cast and load

a .312 mold for your 7.62x39 wouldn't be a bad place to start , 30-30 is a good place to start if you have one 35 cal is good as is 45

I have a friend who casts and loads the .225 bullet in 223rem, but he shoots them from a 1:14 twist AR he also only loads to about 2400fps

bigger calibers also tend to have slower twist rates slower twist is more forgiving to cast and since your not really pushing high velocities

What Paul said. All good advice, especially not starting with .22 cal. There are guys using Ar’s and cast, but they have a lot of experience and still have troubles.

I do casting on boolits and also some buck shot and sinkers. Wolfdog do not let it get you on cast boolit for how it is there you will learn in time on there I know try to learn too much at once. Like state about the Lyman cast book will help you the best and then go from there .If you able to find the 3rd Edition of it you will learn more on it , I do the old way of size and lube my boolits.I do 22cal for my 22-250 . If you look to load for semi auto Lyman dose have a manual on it that have jacket and cast bullets data.
