I have a 12' Smokercraft Alaskan and the old Johnson that is on it may be on its last legs. Curious if everyone has any experience with Tohatsu outboards. Price point seems good and they have been around a long time. I believe they make the motors (and maybe more parts) for Nissan and possibly Mercury on small HP models???

I may also look at putting a 4 or 5 hp on a canoe.

Mostly curious on feedback in the 4 to 15 HP range models. Any input is appreciated.

Thanks

I had a older 25 hp tohatsu on my jon boat and never had and problems with it for the 10 years I owned it. Always started right up and did its job, and decent on fuel.

I have a 2004 16' Mirrocraft I bought from a lady who had gotten it in a divorce settlement. It has a 40 HP Tohatsu on it. I've had the boat and motor for about 10 years now. I have a 18' Lund with a 115 Yamaha on it. I would consider the Tohatsu a better motor than the Yamaha for dependability. I've never had to do anything other than normal maintenance on the Tohatsu.

At the end of open water fishing, I run Sta-Bil in all my motors when I put them to bed for the winter. In Spring, I change the gear oil. The Tohatsu always starts right up in spring. If I needed a motor and the Tohatsu fit the bill, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

Pretty sure they make the majority of outboards built today kind of like what MTD does with mowers in the US. You pay more depending what name they put on its the same motor but the sicker is different.

Who else do they make motors for besides mercury?

Nothing wrong with a Tohatsu, I used them commercially for years. The 2 strokes were like the good old evinrudes / johnsons., but upgraded, they were a little loud and clunky but always started and never quit.

The designs changed some years ago but they still are a tough motor, and the price is right,

It's the motor to have around here in the 9.9hp. Well built, dependable, everyone wants one.

A buddy of mine has two - a 5 hp and maybe a 9 hp. Both are dependable in cold weather
