6# Trilene XL clear monofilament. Only line I use. I have landed a 24" rainbow on this line, as well as 5" panfish. Stren retains too much memory for me. I tried fluorocarbon and threw it away. This is the only line I use as well. Other than on my catfish rods.

I usually use on Trilene XL on all my spincast and spinning reels but decided to test out the bass pro brand mono 3 years ago. I initially only put it on a couple of reels to try but I REALLY like the stuff. It has a lot of stretch, which for my crappie rods I like. It is very hard to break and casts great. It is a lot cheaper and if I had several reels to spool up it's what I would use. A lot of stretch....sounds like stren. Do you know who makes it for bass pro, or do they make their own?

First off, Zebco's suck, as you have had them apart and see the metal to line contact which is hard on all line. It is why they all came with rope for line. They also are not precise in setting line tension so break offs are common.
Second, you have a reel which is hard on line, and rods which do not help line out, coupled with children who will find ways to snag the Lochness Monster of trees, docks and boats and be pulling like it is a 1000 dollar bill.
For those reasons, I like 10 pound even for bluegills, as kids snap line, and kids get sad when the line breaks, as they will not change the line and you will not either when it is frayed. Zebco used heavy, not very stretchy line and I like most here, caught numbers of fish on those reels and rods.
As you are in Ohio, you have bullheads and you just might find a cat or some other bottom feeder like a Northern pick up your bait, or a walleye might decide it likes bluegill bait that day. 8 will hold, but 10 or 12 even will give a better edge. I once caught a 5 pound walleye on a Zebco 606 and all I did was turn the crank as the fish would not move. It was great fun and excitement and the kids will scream when they tie into Jonah's whale as it will happen, and then you will have wonderful memories of trying to land a big fish on panfish portions.
I do not mean for this to get long, but I fish with 10 or 12 pound test all the time. I have been with the light line advocates and have caught as many or more fish. When that finesse fishing came out, that was the fishing companies trying to get people to go light, so they broke off lures and bought more. I don't have a company giving me fishing things, so I go heavy and I have never had a problem. Any name brand mono is going to work.
Have a great summer with those kids!

Catch, great option if you have a scheels in your area. They offer bulk line up to 12# mono and will take off the old line and spool the bulk line on. Each reel should cost less than $1.75. I have been using the bulk line for walleye smallmouth etc. for the last year. Change out my reels couple times a year. Thanks bud, I appreciate that but we don't have those local. Star flakes, leave my Zebco's alone lol, been catching fish on'em for all but 50 years. Being I'm doing over a dozen of them I thought it would be nice to have them all spooled with the same line. I just found a 606, still can't find the 808's. I love them for cats and carp.

It used to be I didn't use anything but name brand monofilament. I preferred Trilene XL over Stren.
But then I tried some cheap Shakespeare monofilament. Danged if I didn't like it alot better than Trilene. It had a lot less memory, less subject to twist, and cheaper too. Since then I have tried all kinds of cheap monofilament and find it superior to most of the big brand named stuff with the fancy packages and glossy magazine advertisements. I can't say it's all like that, but I don't plan on paying for name brand monofilament anymore.

how you put the line on is as important as the line. One twerk per revolution of the handle??? BTW I love the Zebcos for kids also. The old 33s were the best.
Life ain't supposed to be easy.

The old 33s were the best. One year Mama bought the old man a Zebco outfit with a 33 on it and it was fancy, had a cool shinny wood like handle. To this day I've never seen a reel cast as far as that one. He could always get out further than me and would rub it in every cast lol. We mainly fished creeks, rivers and ponds. Plus Shreve lake, never had any fancy gear and I like an open face too!
