Just picked up my first metal detector, a used Bounty Hunter Pioneer 202. I've always had an interest in it, but not enough to pay full price for a new one. But for $50 for a working unit with a few controls to monkey with, I figured it was time to take the leap.
I'm still not sure where I'm going to do my detecting, but now if the opportunity presents itself, I'll be ready. Not much for historical relics around me that I'm aware of, but plenty of old farms I could maybe hit (with permission of course.) I'll probably dig some test beds in my own yard with various items to do some practicing and to familiarize myself with the unit.
I know there are a few detectorists on here, any tips for a newbie? Or anyone care to share some of your better finds?

Along with your test beds do a thorough search of your property. Cousin bought a nice one recently and most of his cool finds were right around his house and mine.

Friend of mine down in Oregon has handfuls of scout neckerchief slides found in school yards. He also finds many coins(lunch money) and costume grade jewelry. Kids take and loose all kinds of stuff! I’m certain there are coffee cans full of treasure on my property. I’ve offered a handsome 10% to cousin if he finds them, we’re gonna be rich! Lol

I used ours to find lost keys in the yard once....dont ask why. Also had a lot of fun with it at the ball fields in fall after the season ended. found a ton of change under and around the grandstands. We too have an old school in town and I didnt find much there except a penny and some old hair clips. I did use ours once and located a coyote trap in a field that the farmer had disced over and completely changed the surface. Found it about where I had set it but was under some freshly disced dirt a few inches. Jim

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

If the ground is easy to dig and it's in a place you may go to often.. Dig everything. It will help you learn your machine and clean out some trash that may block signal from a good target near a junk one..Of course always replace your divots and don't tear up a place so your not allowed back..

My first detector was a Bounty Hunter. Next, I got a Garrett, but it wasn't submersible. I found some decent stuff in parks, camping spots, and beaches. But, not in the water. So, I bought a Fisher Aquanaut. It was a decent machine in the water, but bulky for land use. Plus, it doesn't discriminate as well as the Minelab Excalibur I now have. The Excalibur 1000 is great. I bought it new on sale some years back for around $1,000. It can be used completely submerged since it's totally waterproof.
I prefer water detecting because it's easier and I find people lose more money and jewelry in the water than on land. At least, that's been my experience.
I don't care how nice the hand soap smells, you should never walk out of the restroom sniffing your fingers.
