I had chickens when I was a teenager some 20 plus years ago. So, some details are a little fuzzy. We (by that I mean my wife) got some chicks a couple months back. I have slacked on getting the chicken coop built. It will be done within the next week. My question is: How hard will it be to get them to roost in the new coop? They have been outside the last couple weeks and have taken to roosting on the hand rail for our west side porch (the ducks are roosting under it). Small porch, 4' x 4'.

I have gotten them all pretty tame. They will come up to me and I can handle them. The chickens that is, the ducks try their best to stay away. Unless I have food for them.

Thanks for any and all advise!

Jerry Jr.

You will honestly probably have to leave them cooped up in the coop for a month or so. Like not letting them out at all for a month. They will see the sun go down every night while they are cooped up and after time will associate the new coop as their roost.

That's been my experience at least.

Thank you for the reply. That is what I was remembering from when I raised them. Gonna have to get them used to their new home. Guess I will have to build a something for the little ones that I can put inside the coop.

Just feed them in the coop right before dark and lock them in. You can still let them free range during the day. Chickens are food greedy and easy to train with feed. You can quickly train them to enter the coop when you give a feed call they associate with being fed.

What KeithC says. One of my grandmothers put her chickens up everyday at 3pm. As soon as she walked outside around that time they all headed for the coop on a dead run for a treat.

I just put the last of my chicks in the coop a week ago, it's a 8×6×8 ft coop with a big run and I leave their food and water inside the coop and they figure it out real quick. Within a week they were all roosting on the 2×4 bars inside the coop. I did have to put them in a few nights before they started on their own [Linked Image]

I put my 3 week old chicks in the coop about 10 days ago. I waited for about 5 days before letting them out into a small run fenced off.

The first time I opened the door to the outside, they just looked out. As soon as I sprinkled a few meal worms on the ramp they moved out.

I have to wait till about 8:30pm before they go to roost. I sneak up on the access door to close it. Or they will start to come out.

Patience. Patience.
