Neighbor asked if I knew what was growing on a dead cottonwood tree and I was shocked to see a bunch of big oyster mushrooms so he split them with me. Nice feast last night.

Found some more this morning! Notice how the gills go all the way down the stems, not a smooth stem and gills only on the top. Always look for that!

Nessy,
You probably have beech trees where you are. They usually produce good, edible mushrooms.

I prefer the oysters to morels. I've always got an eye out when I'm duck hunting for oysters on the willow trees.

Those look great! Is this the time of year to be looking for them?

Zim, I think they grow as long as it isn't freezing. Talked to a guy that went down a river in the fall and found them on willow close to the water.

Oysters are great. I usually find them on dead and dying aspens and cottonwoods after soaking rains. I found about 8 pounds of them a couple weeks ago.

The can be a gold color too, just always look for the gills running down the stem and not on just the bottom of the top.

I see them more here on Ash trees along creek bottoms in fall just as leave start to drop...They really stand out then, can't say that have looked this time year. I'm wondering if will be less now that Ash Borers kill lot of the ash trees here..
One friend of mine was finding them high enough on tree. He used a stick with a loop heavy mono fish line to reach up cut them down..

Yeah Nessy, there are other trees that will hold good edible mushrooms, but in the past I have picked a lot of good ones off of beech trees.
