I have couple freezers, upright always run, another 3 Rd freezer that defrost, an died, fail to start, Alli rember on it was pull defrost button out an forgot about it for few hrs, have a 15 year old Kenmore. Electronic digital readout, with instant frost freeze, I never use that feature, it is big, commercial size, other than defrost, few times a year, it has run straight for 2 years, used shutdown in summer, not much in it, next to empty for months, it cost a lil electricity, I hear post more once on here, that better to let run year round ? Less chance of failure ?

I'll answer you again, even though you have asked for several years in a row and always ignore my advice, lol. I unplug all my freezers that I can get empty, set a fan in them until they are completely dry, then close them up and plug them in again when I need them I have 6 freezers of various sizes and ages, been doing it this way for many years with no issues.

Much more important in my opinion is to use a freezer alarm when they are in use in case they ever do die.... https://smile.amazon.com/Thermomete...zer+alarm&qid=1592063047&sr=8-41

A freezer running all year is costing you more than you think!

Mine get disconnected every day when the generator runs out of gas. I hope they survive,

The best time to replace a freezer is before it fails. Sell it to somebody else around its 10th year.

Got mine from my parents. Has only been unplugged to move to my house 23 years ago. They bought it in the late seventies. Don't care how much it cost to run and don't want to know. It rotates being full of deer, walleye and pelts or a combination there of. Hope it keeps chugging along, knock on wood.

I forget things like that, someone was saying about something can start leaking from corrosion from be shut off for long time when start, I don't know, mine is in damp spot at timez in summer. In heavy rain, water goes underneath it occasionally in bad rain storms , big dehumdifer junk out, not buy another

Refrigeration equipment likes to run. The oil that lubricates the compressor flows in the pipes with the refrigerant. When you shut the power off to them the refrigerant will migrate to the coldest spot in the system and can end up sitting in the compressor as a liquid and the compressor can’t pump liquid and won’t start. So I never shut my freezers off for a extended period more than to defrost if needed.
Older compressor will take way more abuse and where built stronger than most new ones. Most new compressor should have a heat tape wrapped around the bottom of the compressor if used in a non heated space or they can slug liquid refrigerant. Most older freezer problems are usually the defrost timer which cost around $20 and just plugs in. The other common problem is the compressor start relay fails again a $20 part called a 3 in 1 hard start relay can replace all the compressor star components. A lot of times these parts fail after a power failure or storm. If your power goes off and back on quickly and your compressor was running it won’t be able to start right back up because of high pressure in the system and it will burn up the start relay and over heat the compressor. If you unplug the unit for a hour and let the compressor co and the pressures equalize it might start again.

Where you live
They tell me that a good salesman can sell a freezer to an Eskimo.
And then convince him to leave it unplugged and block the door open to save on the electric bill. grin

I have a big upright, Montgomery Wards brand, that we bought in 1982. Run continuous since then. I have an International Harvester fridge in the garage that I use for deer quarters. It dates back to the early 1950s.

The Internationals are excellent for longevity.
About the only thing that kills them, is being moved and not waiting for the shavings to settle in the oil before plugging them in again.

So u think there a chance if I buy a hard stsrt relay, I csn get the freezer quit running , back like 10 yrs ago that died after pull out defrost button? The others that running are not self defrost, where is hard start relay at ? I rember it made a faint noise but compresser wouldnt go, I used to use it for coon carcass meat, to sell

I could call freezer shop or tech an maybe find out about 3 in 1 relay part, I doubt go work on the one got, but ask

Supco 3in1 hard start relay # RC410. United Refrigeration has them or order online. Usually the compressor will make a humming noise and then click but won’t start if the start components are no good or the compressor is seized.

Changing out parts Is just guess work. It may be the starting capacitor but It's still just guess work as to what the real problem Is.

Toss the old freezer in the dump or keep it for minnows, and go buy a new one.
Freezers are dirt cheap-can get new ones on sale for a couple hundred bucks. And they are easier on the elec.bill than old ones.
Why waste time trying to figure out and maybe fix worn out old ones when you could use that time to earn money.
You have gotten your money's worth 10 times over out of a 20 year or older freezer.

I too have a big Wards freezer. My mom and dad gave it to me when they didn't need it. That was back in the mid 80's.

My parents bought it the year I was born. 1959!! 61 years ago.
