My back hurts. Anyone else?

I did it for nearly 30 years. Plus other jobs in factory. But mostly different saws. Mostly one. I like. It. Work by self lot. Yes hard heavy work but there carts. Like it much better do now. But this processed pine. Lumber. Not at lumber mill, not cut boards out trees. At kiln, ur need mask there, an no allergy trouble, stack different cut boards in back saw for days is not fun, I never did it days. Mostly byself, there dust collection system, helps lot, that place closed up good an done. To bad

I have worked in a stud mill for 34 years, 2 1/2 until I retire. We make 8 and 9 foot 2x4 and 2x6s. We used to cut railroad ties. Most mills now are mostly automated and few people touch the wood. I work in an older mill and there is still a lot of manual labor but even that is nothing like it used to be. Workers are few and far between so owners do everything they can to keep them happy. If you work hard and don't complain you should advance quickly. Safety is a primary concern don't be goofing off. If and older worker gives you advice listen and watch how others do the job you are doing. Most of us have figured out the easiest way to get the job done. You might have to muscle the work for a while but it will get easier. Take pride in the every job you do.

all.lumber used come in was from mills. Different. Grades or kinds pine. Hem fur, syp, SPF, no.1 or 2 grade. I don't believe no lumber was from around this state. Maybe a little select hardwood for trim somewhere, but little. All imported from tree farms an stud mills. Outstate. South mostly, ppl used complain, about the place an say ridiculous stuff. Like all trees around here, Are being cut down for place. To build, all lumber come from mills, tree farms, down south, problem had. At times. Moldy wood.

That's a fact. "Hard word" is all a matter of mentality and perspective. Any labor feels hard when you're out of shape. Just like any math feels difficult when you haven't done any in awhile. If you have the gumption to push yourself through until your body adjusts to the job, and force yourself to learn new things, you can do anything.

Run while you can! It STINKS. I worked the green chain for a summer when I was only 15 and threw 16' white oak planks that probably weighed as much as I did then. Probably the hardest job I ever had in my life. It most likely will be a long time before you get off the line and into something easier. IF you make a career out of it, you'll be broken down in the back and have a rough life in the elder years. My father did it most of his life. Nothing against hard work, but that job is no joke! It will make you appreciate pretty much anything you do as a profession after that experience.

Worked in a sawmill as a young man. Pulled green chain for several years. Its hard physical labor. You sweat your A## off in the summer and freeze in the winter.

Sundance you are so right about technique. When I first started pulling green chain I thought i was going to die. I remember going to my car for lunch break and thinking there is no way I can keep this up all day. Then after they had their laughs some of the older hands started showing me the ropes. After a week or two It got a lot easier.

Pulling green chain is literally green lumber, heavy with moisture . A good friend of mine some years ago here worked pulling green chain, she outworked a lot of the guys . You can sure give it a go, coonman

Why would a refrigeration tech want to work at a sawmill ?

Green chain is a name for 3 side by side chains about 4 feet apart, moving un milled logs into a mill and lumber, cants, poles and posts out to a stacking or bundle area.

Green chain here is what Sharon says. Milled green boards come down a chain and you pull and stack them to be dried. Dry chain you pull the dried planed boards and stack them to go to sale yards. If you are allergic to trees sawmills are not for you. Some wear masks in the planer because of the fine sawdust, we have no one who wears a mask in the mill because the sawdust is much coarser and a larger size.

Ebsurveyor I like the way you think. If your phone is that important, why don’t you go work for it?

I think he was suggesting this for safety reasons. If something goes bad your phone would be within reach. I never had a cell phone until I started my current job 13 years ago, they required a phone since on the the farm we often are off on our own and it gives us a way to communicate in a time efficient manner, as well as for emergencies.

Seems no one under 40 can go 10 minutes without looking at their phone. A mill is no place for that.

It wouldn't be for me, I can rember. Lots allergy stuff, off an on, itching face, nose red, green wood can be nasty, I work in modular housing plant, did different jobs there but mostly in charge of cutting lots different material for all different things. Lots orders, lot to cut an stock, have work with metal most recently, sheet or tinny stuff an most recently press work parts.
