I'm getting an order from F&T on Monday.
It's got a bunch of stuff for footholding yotes 'n fox.
How careful should I be about scent? Do I need to wear gloves when I unbox the stuff?
I'm boiling, dyeing, and waxing the traps so I know I don't have to worry about those, I'm mainly talking about the sifter and stuff like that.
Any thoughts/suggestions? Thanks.

All the merch you bought has been on shelves in a trap supply house with who knows what kind of smells, people touching packaging etc. not to mention all the lure smells and any manufacturing odors from when it was built.

Air everything out. Wash it, degrease it. Dye it. Store is someplace relatively odor free. Or outdoors.

Don't need gloves other than to keep your hands clean from all the machine oil on the traps.

Good advice above. I like to store in sealed totes with dry grass or pine bows. Wax does pick up odors so I like them to be natural smells. Until the equipment has been prepared for season dont worry about odor. You will get more dug traps and avoidance from loose bedding and too much lure than a bit of foriegn odor IMHO.

Life sure is tough when you don't learn from the mistakes of others.

You have been given good advice I assure you but if you are still not satisfied look in the archives. There are truckloads of good information but of course its not interactive.

open things up like it was any other box maybe outside encase a lure leaked but that would be rare and they are typically in a plastic bag or two.

traps and cables do not come ready to use , they come covered in light weight oil so they do not arrive rusty.

so don't open the box on your moms white lacy table cloth and then prep like you plan , no one says you can't boil and dye your sifter.

with all your practice set making the dirt and being stored outside will knock the smell of your shovel, sifter ect. months till season let it air out it will be fine.

first demo at Trappers ED the instructor said , "I try not to leave any sent I don't need to , but you loose 100K skin cells and some hair every minute , you can't squat over a set for 2 minutes and not leave some sent. so try but don't get nuts about it."

some guys have a change of gloves for every set and always step away with their left foot , spin around 3 times on their right foot and quack like a duck 3 times (meant to be excess) they tried something they connected so they always did it , if they connected again it was because they did it right in their minds if not they had messed up the sequence of spinning on one foot and quacking like a duck. so they make sure to get it perfect next time. this is how superstition develops.
the same guy will take all those cotton gloves from each set home and have his wife wash them , she uses a scented laundry detergent and is wearing her perfume while she sorts the laundry. so much for scent control.

if you have a secure location where you can store your traps like a shed where you don't store fuel or a wood shed that is open air but not going to be an issue for theft , many guys have a wood fence area around the side or back of the garage , and will prep traps then a month before season hang traps on nails inside the fence they get rain and wind and sun and should be well aired out by opening day.

many just air out some plastic totes , leave them out int he sun a week or two so they don't smell like the plastic . maybe toss some leaves in the bottom of them and store traps in the tubs in the garage till opening morning in the tubs all the traps are died and waxed and ready to set

hope that helps

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Good advice above,,,
Many people have taken traps straight out the box went caught coyotes and fox .
I Set many traps bare handed . Do not worry overall about human scent it can 't be helped.

Do not over think what to do , it will make you sick in the end Like red mt stated is the best. For me for the time it will be to trap for me I do not over think on the sifter and others things. You will always leave your scent behind no matter how hard you try not to and the animals will know you been there. all I do is set my footholds with gloves because of I use bear hands to use the lures and baits and urine after. For snares I do not worry about sent much also. just use what works for you and like stated also about read for what had been posted before . Do a search on it , Just do not over think it .

As others have said don't worry about contaminating things unpacking. As far as the sifter and such treat along with traps etc. I also don't use gloves of any kind setting coyote snares or traps. As long as you are relatively clean you will leave very little scent from your hands. Most of the scent will be from your body. Just get in, set and get out as quickly as possible and you will have little problem. Coyotes are generally quite familiar with human scent and will know that you were there; you just don't want to leave a bunch at the set.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

You’ve been given a lot of good advice but the very best advice came from coydog2.

Hang the traps, chain, stakes, sifter, etc outside under a big ole spruce tree for the summer.(as long as you are in an area where you dont have any theives)
In late sept, early october boil and wax. They should be in the right condition by then from being out in the weather for a couple months.
As far as scent goes, its not the human smell at a set,its being careless with lure and bait and getting those smells where they are not supposed to be(like on your traps and snares) that causes problems.
I wear gloves when handling lure and bait and set bare hands(clean).
I have a different set of gloves for fuelling equipment at home or at camp.
