Question for fellow reloaders, you guys ever have a good load go bad on you ? Went shooting the other day with my buddy and the 75gr HPBT I had loaded that where stacking five shots on a quarter @100 a few months ago where acting like they didn't belong in my dang gun . Not sure if I just didn't seat everything as precise as the last ones or my powder measure where off but my groups where just all over the map. I was considering it was me but the 53gr Vmax's I had load where stacking same as usual. Could it be a temp problem possibly? It was close to 65 when I was doing really good with those 75's and it was around 92 the other day . Pretty sure the power is 8208xbr ,I'd have to doble check but never heard about it having any real problems with temp sensitivity

Lots of things can do that, but top of the list would be to check your seating depth.

From there it could be anything from throat erosion to high humidity on the day you loaded. Lots of variables, too many to say....this is it, imo.

To add, being your not sure of what powder you loaded, I'm going out on a limb and say you didn't replicate the load correctly.

It happens. blush

Oil/water near your loader? The youngest boy used my powder funnel to fill his mini bike and the powder did some crazy stuff.

May I ask did you use a progressive re loader or a single or T press? why I ask is because of if it a progressive and the powder drop with on pull could change things, also not know what powder that is used dose not help. Some powders act different with temps beside what is stated .

I assume the same gun. New lot or brand of bullets and primers or same batch? I doubt the temperature is at fault, that's not much of a change. Pull a couple bullets and check the powder charge since you mentioned that.

I had that happen once several years back. Turns out it was very old powder. That probably isn't the culprit in your case. Temperature/humidity could have some detrimental impact. How large a discrepancy are you seeing ?

92 and you laid them out in the sun to cook for a bit ?
or
92 and they were 5 minutes out of the air conditioned truck in the shade?

easy test put a ice pack in a small cooler and put the box of rounds in the cooler , so that they are 65 or lower when you remove 5 rounds and load and shoot. if that doesn't make them better I would say other factor.

Could your barrel just now be getting broken-in? Or could there be some fouling or copper build-up in your barrel since the last time you shot those loads?

Could be anything from Different bullet lot number to revising die set up ( neck tension ) and a bunch of things in between. Pull a couple and give everything a good dose of looking at.

Check your data. Is the load exact as the others? Check scope mounts. Is your rifle clean? Sarge

In addition to the above suggestions, what could have changed the pressure on your barrel like screws coming loose, stock screws, or wood warping?

I wouldn't suspect the powder if it's IMR 8208 XBR. I've not experienced or seen any indication that it's temp sensitive.

My first thought would be the powder charge weight but I'd measure the overall length of a sample (5-10) just to make sure they were within a few thousandth (+/- 0.005 maybe) then I'd pull those bullets and weigh the charges. I would expect +/- 1 grain.

If the C.O.A.L. and powder measurements check good I'd weigh the pulled bullets next. They should be easily within +/- 2 grains.

The only two other variables would be the primers and the brass. I suspect this is a .223 and if you worked up the load with commercial brass then mixed in some LC (Lake City) or military brass the point of impact could be significantly different (case capacity).

I hope there is something here that helps.

Why do you suspect the ammo? Possibly something external.

Well as the 55 grainers seem to shoot fine as he said I don't expect that loose screws or scope etc. Are at fault. In the past I have had ( can't remember for sure if it was Hornady SST or Sierra game kings ) 120 Grain 6.5mm bullets from two different lot numbers and the ogive was 6 thou different from one lot to the other.

Same powder, brass, primer, bullet, prepped brass? Could be many different things?

Was it uncleaned fired brass you were using when you last reloaded? Ive haven't seen it happen in just a few months but I have had a similar issue. What was happening to me was I didn't have the necks clean and the carbon buildup inside the neck was sealing the bullet to the neck creating inconsistent pressures and causing my groups to be all over the place. Started cleaning my cases between reloads and hasn't been an issue since. If you have any left turn your seating die down an 1/8 of a turn you will feel and hear them break free. Some will be sealed some won't you will be able to tell. Only thing that throws me off is how quickly yours would have had to seal themselves to the case.
