I recently picked up some Sleepy Creek #11's and threw on some new chain & Hagz. We have a short 5 day season in NY. I'm curious to see if anyone else has had success using them for Fisher.

I never trapped a fisher in a No.11 but I have trapped otter with them.
I believe if you want a good humane foothold trap for fisher-that one would fit the bill.

They will definitely hold a fisher. Hopefully one will make the rounds during your short season. Set up two or three locations miles apart if you can to up your odds!

I've never trapped Fisher but I sure like your set up. I loves me some Sleepy Creek traps (wish they wouldn't have gone away from the round pan though). Good luck!

I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....

you might want to consider a sweet bait (like honey based) as they may respond to it better early in the season, they are working the ground more like a coon. go into the woods and you will smell alot of skunk with beaver and see pole sets, so much skunk in the air its like the old days fox trapping, that early they are into the nuts and berries not old beaver meat and skunk, thats why the hit ratio is so bad with these sets early.. They will lay up in large mast groves, with good visibility, places where you would look for old coon den trees. When they hit they start spinning, so the swivel set up looks pretty good. a friend of mine also makes a fisher gland lure that seems to have quite an attraction to them. They do not like mink or the smell of mink gland lure, they will swim across beaver ponds and streams with no effort. the old males are point a to point traveler. Most fisher books are written for later in the season with snow on the ground, not early fall with ground prey, fruit and nuts in abundance, they want sugar. i have spent alot of time tracking them in the snow the last two years. they will also establish toilets on blown down trees, like big mink droppings. When you are in the woods and it looks like great coon country but you find no coon sign, you might be in fisher core area, Good luck they are killing machines. See you in the woods with the other guys. oh by the ways some of these guys are running 60 to 80 pole and cubby sets a days and only catch 1 to 3 fisher in the 5 days season. you might want to think grey fox trapping, one other item, they have a long neck, quite a ways from their front feet.

This is good to know. The property I hunt has a old Beaver lodge (Was Active Up Until this Jan I think) and I have seen tracks and droppings along the pond where there is a old tree split apart. I had one on trail camera by the pond 2 years ago. We also have a oak flat with old logging trails cutting through the property. Now with the public land, I will have to scout and recon. Also I will have to look into getting some more 160's. Thank you for the treasure trove of knowledge.

TonawandaTrapper, Best of luck to you this upcoming season.Looking forward to the pics!

Nessmuck, the skull looks very cool! Unless they plan on changing things, the 5 day season is for the new areas that opened up for fisher recently.

Let's go Brandon!

This might raise a few eyebrows but what was in trap proves trap as good as nbr 11. I when running long mink lines caught numerous otter, fisher, coon and one yote in number one double coil Northwoods traps. The yote was caught by one toe...lol. these sets were either blind or pocket sets for mink. Yote was caught in pocket set. Trap was on four foot of chain fastened on a rail road plate. Yote was across creek and wrapped around alder brush. Otters were either up or downstream drowned. Coon as fisher were anywhere plus a couple up trees...lol...

My uncle has had a problem with Mink the past two years. He caught one red handed (faced) and was able to shoot it dead before you could escape out the coop. I'm thinking of setting a few of these at his place. Its good to hear they hold a a variety of species. I'm 28, hopefully I'll see an Otter season in NY southern zone in my lifetime.
