Went to pickup my ar this morning, filled out the paperwork and was delayed.

Why is it sometimes I get an ok and other times I get delayed? (Nothing on my record has changed in the last 25 years)( class A misdemeanor possession of marijuana in 1995 is all that's on my record)

I have other firearms but this is a lit of what was store bought in order

Did you put your SSN on the form?

I'm guessing! Might be the time when your buying. Like now they are not only busy because of a buying spurt, but also covid.

Same delays during Obama, because of that buying spurt.

If i don't include my SSN i get delayed every time. If include it it goes right through. I guess there is someone else with my name that I'm being confused with

Could be as simple as another person fitting some or a part of your profile that requires a second look.

Some states like mine will accept your ccl and you don't have to wait as they call it in. That ended the delays I would sometimes get, you might check that out if it's an option in your state.

System is overwhelmed im sure with first time gun owners. I have been contacted by several people that all now suddenly want an AR and ask me what they should be looking for. Simple answer right now is what ever is in stock they can get.

I always put my ssn and have never been delayed or anything like that. I have had a transfer or two while all this covid stuff was goin on. They told me its hit or miss with getting a delay right now.

I did not put my ssn in , I over looked it while filling it out and the dealer never said anything. I didn't know it was even an option not to put it in. Just after I left I realized that I couldn't remember putting in my ssn. So I called him and he said I didn't have to put it down and that they usually only go off your driver's license number

I would have put it on there just missed it. Now I'm stressing and worried I'm going to get denied.

If you have never been denied in the past, and your record is still clean you should get a proceed. They have so many days to let the FFL holder know what the NICS check status is and if there is no word by that date the transaction can proceed. Most times you get a proceed or a denied ruling by the next day, sometimes two. Every time I have seen the time limit run out there was a proceed granted after the limit expired. Have heard of the time limit expiring and a denied ruling coming in after that. Not really sure what the ATF does at that point as I never had to deal with it.

the law is written so that is you do not get a proceed or deny after 3 or 5 days you get to pick up the gun legally from the FFL. only some FFL will follow the law as written. big box stores tend to have a corporate policy no gun without a proceed.



these safe guards were written in so that the NIC's system could not be used as a way to deny a right to the people at least not for more than a few days.

as I understand it NICs is not the ATF but the FBI.

On my 30.06 they put a hold on it. Cables guy told me that if they didn't say proceed or denied in 3 days I can pick up my gun. They never contacted Cables and in 3 days I went and picked up my gun.

This time my ffl dealer said they put a hold on it until the 25th and that is longer than 3 days unless they don't count today or the weekends.

It's just a pain in the arse and no I have only been in trouble with the law 1 time, nothing in the last 25 years

Used to do a lot of FLL checks. Common delays and reasons for denials were things like name not matching your drivers license, no middle initial given on form, etc. SSN here, plays no role. Once in a while a traffic warrant would show up and give a hard denial.

Most guys with minor denial flags got them fixed quickly. In all the years we did them, only one hard felony type denial.

Make sure you are using full legal name, including middle initial if applicable, or, exactly how your name is on your drivers license.

UPIN. = Unique Personal Identification Number. You can submit your finger prints to FBI and get a UPIN #. I have one and my 4473 forms go threw like lightning. If you have classified service with government You may get delayed or have a common name

It will go through. It happens to me about half the time. I think they get busy and just put a bunch of them on hold.
