We have used two 8N's (with Sherman transmissions) for several years here around the farm. Nice "little" tractor for "little" jobs. Your 9 would be a step less. Everything being said above is mostly true. Needs an over-running clutch for the PTO if mowing, no power steering, no live power PTO, suction lift carburetor, needs converted to 12 volt and electronic ignition for wintertime use, etc., etc., BUT it is a stable tractor on a slope compared to a rider mower and it can usually pull a wagon, run an auger, get in a tight spot etc.. The small tractors of today or even from the 80's-2000's are better but if you look at the 4 All American Ag Tractors you find the 8N as one of them (JD 4020, IH 'M', and AC WD as the other 3). Many folks say that there has not been a farming tractor built since 4WD tractors came out so that's been a few years. If you purchase the 9 remember they are not the tractors of today and have some limitations. The Kubotas seem to be the most popular small tractor here..

OP, the people complaining against the 9n are the ones that know not of what they speak. Apparently they couldn't tune one correctly.

Great little tractors. Around 22 horse power. Be sure to get PTO slip clutch adapter or it will push the tractor when you push the clutch to stop it if it is in gear. Trust me when I say you get really good at reaching down and disengaging the PTO in a hurry. 9n will pull a 4 foot hog, but a 5 footer is about all it wants. The 8n models had more horse power and a 4 speed transmission. Some of the 9n's had a step up transmission which was nice. When not using the PTO keep it covered up as they don't have a live PTO and must run all the time for the lift to work and will grab your pants and tear them off you (ask my younger brother) if not kill you. 9n was made from 1939 to 1942. 2n made from 42 to 48 and 8n 48 to 52. I still use our old 9n in the garden every year.

I would like to get some thing with a front loader but a 8n and allis wd that don't run yet is all I got.Ifyou have any questens pm me or post right here I will answer what I can I have worked on a couple.and with a slip clutch you should be fine with a 5 foot bush hog . hope this helps

Just out of curiosity how does it steer without power steering? Been awhile since i ran anything without it. My Farmall 450 even has it.

Foot brake on one or the other rear wheel for quick turns. Steering wheel for tooling around.

Only problem with 9n's are the 3 speed tranny. 1st is not low enough.

$700 is probably a good deal.

The two 9n's i have are 3 forward speed transmissions as was stated. But there is a High and Low. My Ford 9N has six forward gears and two reverse. In 1st low it will flip itself over if chained to something heavier than she is.

Yep, jctunnelrat is spot on regarding the clutch. I'd definitely get one before brush hogging.

In response to your original question I opted to purchase a well cared for older Ferguson (1953) over a Ford N series because of the gearing.

Now this is just my opinion and should be taken with a really big grain of salt, but it seems to me that the Ford (8n/9n) needs just a little more throttle for the brush hog to cut than the Ferguson. This increased throttle also increased the tractor speed just enough to bounce you around a little more. Of course none of those old tractors ride very good...

The bottom line is a 9n will run a 5 ft brush hog just fine. If the price is right I'd jump on it.

FWIW, I've always heard a Ford Jubilee (not sure of the years they were built) were the cats meow and say better than the n series. You can spot these because they have a little hump down the center of the hood.

The Golden Jubilee was the same exact tractor as the Ford NAA. They rebadged it for one year as the "Golden Jubilee" in 1953 for the 50th anniversary of Ford Motor Co.
