I could see it being alright with bird dogs but having would never let hounds inside. They aren't there to please like a retriever and need to kept disciplined and hard. They need the grit to hunt in the extreme heat or cold and run game for miles and tree or bay it up till I get there. You don't keep soldiers pampered in their mama's house and expect them to perform in harsh conditions.

Shhh don't tell our coonhounds they're supposed to be lazy bums.

The kennel masters , game keepers , hunt masters and others often lived with and amongst the entire pack way back during the period . We're talking about dozens of dogs. I also have some old books about hunting bears and lions in the Mississippi Delta. In one , it mentions that you couldn't move a pillow without finding a dog under it. In turn , have others where the dogs are mentioned of being on pickets.

Long time ago, I hunted with the best rabbit hounds I ever saw and they were kept inside. They were hunting fools!!

Sometimes they'd take off when he let them out to whiz and you'd hear them chasing. He'd just say a few choice words and let them run until they came back.

Had a beagle like that. If you didn't keep an eye on him when he was outside he'd take off and you'd hear him trailing rabbits all day long. He'd come back and wade into the pond to get a drink and cool off when he was tired.

He was a pampered pooch but one heck of a rabbit dog.

Some breeds are better suited to kennel living than others. Our springer is a hunting machine, but his bond with me is a critical part of our hunting dynamic, he hunts for me, not himself. He'd be either a neurotic mess or a soulless zombie if he was relegated to human contact only at feeding and training time. And that's fine with me and my wife. Every time I reach down and scratch his head, I know we're both wishing it was bird season.

After they do this for me, it don't seem right to make them sleep outside. My shorthair covers 20 to 35 miles every day we hunt chukar or huns. They share the bed with me.

awesome pics wild Idaho! id love to hunt some of those huns some day. I gotta new shorthair that's a year and a half old. we gave the local bob whites a hard time last year but im hopin to spread our wings a little this year

Oh I don't know about always holding up my end of the deal. Sometimes Rowdy gives me the (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) look of disgust after a covey of chukar gets up 10 feet in front of me and I 3 shot whiff em, usually shooting over them as they fly downhill.

Mine start every year about May or June...then it’s back outside from Sept until the following May or June. I decided this when I walked out with a coat and ran with my dog one beautiful HOT May morning. My dogs love the AC but don’t mind the cold.
And yeah, my dogs are just like family. But, they know their job, and do it well.
Once they retire they live out their lives in front of the fireplace in the Winter and lying around in the AC during the Summer. I’ll let them sleep in whichever room they choose to lay down at night. Figured they earned that luxury. Even had friends say when they die they want to be reincarnated as one of our dogs.

I've got a German Shorthair asleep on my lap right now. He's kinda big for a lap dog but he doesn't seem to care.
