James's wife is Japanese. She can probably help if you PM him.

I believe it's Chinese. And the characters don't say what's in the box. They are four character phrases called "Cheng Yu" There was a time I may have been able to help, but those days are long past. Sorry.

My wife says that's an expensive knife set. The top center characters say "trademark," and the large characters below say "Sukemaru," which is the trade name or model name of the set.

Below the large characters is the signature of the maker.

The characters to the right are the full name of the maker with his seal in red. The characters on the left are the company and group name that produced the knives, with the corporate seal in red. Japanese use seals as a form of identification. If you lose your seal and someone finds it, they can forge your name.

Written Japanese is tricky because it's a blend of Japanese and Chinese characters (used more formally). Except for "Sukemaru," my wife can't tell how these names are pronounced without the author giving more clues. Chinese characters usually have multiple meanings and the Japanese seem comfortable with ambiguity in writing, as they do in much of life.

Hope this helps.

Jim

Japanese use Chinese characters too, but don't pronounce them the same way. They generally have the same or similar meaning, though.

Thanks Jim ! Don't know what they would cost in US Money, but they run about 132,000 Japanese Yen for the set.

They do look nice. I’m a bit of a collector of wood tools. Lately been picking up tools related to timber frame/post and beam work.

Ah, wood chisels, not knives.

My wife doesn't know what a wood chisel is.
