Hey all, so I may have an encroachment hassle on my hands.. I’m looking for a reputable surveyor in my area. I have looked around and can’t seem to find anyone with a good number and doesn’t want to sub divide my property. I’m just looking for boundaries and monuments installed. Thanks for any help!

Good luck!! I'm beginning to think that finding a surveyor in Alaska is about likely as finding a possum. I've been trying to find one for nearly three years to do a subdivision for me in the Bristol Bay region. I even had one guy do some preliminary work, but the last I heard from him was over a year ago when he said he would get me a quote to complete the project. Luckily I am nothing out of pocket yet.

Waggler, I just don’t get? I have an acquaintance looking for a surveyor as well and he’s getting the same results.. I just can’t believe there’s not a small company or independent up here that doesn’t want a few grand in pocket?? White I’ll look him up. I like no muss no fuss. Should be simple, I’ll even bird dog across the river to plant a stake or whatever! Thanks for the feedback guys!

Thanks Pete, I’ll look into RCH. As I recall design Alaska wasn’t interested unless I wanted to subdivide... Viking I was given an eyeball estimation when we bought the place...I knew better too. Now the renter is eyeballing it. We’ve had words before so they know how I feel about the line. Last time they were WELL onto my property cutting wood. I hate to be a jerk about it but encroachment can be a real pain and potentially costly to come to an agreement. Update on the issue. Apparently the property owner behind me has had a survey at some point. I’ve been trying to contact her but no luck so far. Not sure if I should even bother...rather just try to get my property up to date.

I used to work as a surveyor (not in Alaska), just because you have maps and think you know where the lines are at a)doesn't mean it is so, I've dealt with this a lot, many maps are wrong, they are usually printed with an overlay of where the property lines should be. . . if the square mile section is actually 5280x5280 . . . which it never is. b) even if you have the corners and can show them to the neighbor, it doesn't mean they are going to stop encroaching. You will likely have to have it surveyed, all the encroachments tied and documented, and then very possibly take them to court to reimbursed (triple stumpage on any trees they fell, at least in the states I've surveyed in) and that still doesn't necessarily mean they won't continue to encroach. I've dealt with several cases where the neighbor would repeatedly pull any corners we set, and even tear out fences, and local law enforcement refused to enforce anything on them.

We are in the burough and there is a map that has corner locations but it’s difficult to see any real detail. I spoke with someone about measuring my own lines and was told it would be difficult for it to stand in court. Need some certifications...also not sure about filing a survey with the burough? I’d not be worried about the trees if we could settle.

Any Registered Surveyor will know the process. Pete
