That's still pretty cheap beef. Hogs are dirt cheap, if you can butcher them yourself. Course, same thing with the beef, lol

Prices are high because corrupt politicians instituted draconian laws to limit competition n the meat processing industry. A few companies, several owned by the Chinese control over 90% of our countries meat processing.

Senator Rand Paul is trying to fix that.

I donot understand why we honest Americans are still following "regulations" when people are breaking LAWS right in front of the police. If you broke some kinda meat regulation in town, the cop would have to walk right past 50 or so illegals to get to the store. PEOPLE, and I use that term lightly, were destroying public property right in front of the police last night in our Capital city, no arrests.

What regulations are you referring to? How would you “fix” them?

Your local grocery store can not buy meat from your local butcher. The meat has to be federally inspected.

Represenative thomas massey introduced the prime act in the house last year . Rand paul introduced it in the senate this year . It would remove the requirement of having a USDA inspector present at time of slaughter for beef pork and sheep meat sold within the state of origin . The processing facilities would still be subject to any local health requirements and unscheduled surprise inspections by USDA .
Processors that do not keep a inspector full time must pay $114 an hour for a inspector , im told its hard to get an appointment. Processors that keep an inspector full time only pay $87 an hour .
Last time i checked no more congressmen had signed on since the riots started so please CALL your representitive and your two senators and ask them to cosponsor the prime act and get it out of committee

How long do you think your local grocery store would be in business if customers found out the were selling meat that was not inspected?

That would be their choice not to sell USDA beef then the local food movement is pushing this along because they want to source local meat . This would bring back the local meat markets that process livstock on site

Federal inspectors don't inspect the meat, they inspect the facility. How would they inspect meat?
The local butchering facility seems to do a booming business, with no federal inspector on sight. More meaningless Govt interference.

Regulations regarding food are not bad. We have breakouts of diseases in lettuce and other produce even with very strict regulations. We also have recalls of hamburger even with inspections. I can only imagine the problems we would have if we don’t have regulations as to how our country’s food Is protected.

Well I guess we need a little civil disobedience. If you were selling meat for a dollar less, I am sure many would get over it.

Why does everyone call them Federal Meat Inspectors?

Local butchers do not have inspectors because the meat they process is not “for sale”.

So it's just a payment of money to the federal government that makes the meat safe. Got it.

well technically it is having an inspector "on site" the inspector must be provided with an office and private bathroom. the inspector does not have to be on the floor watching anything.

they have loosened in state sales but no one has the capacity to take any more any way really

an inspected facility can now in WI as I understand it buy animals butcher and sell from their store. where in the past they could bring in inspected meat or have an inspector on site for the day of slaughter to sell.

seems that the part that impacts the meat the least the kill, gut and skin is the part that needed an inspector around for. even though they are really there to inspect the facility.

the local grocery store get inspected on some time interval to be able to handle meat , they can bring in inspected meat and break it down into cuts and repackage.

the local butcher shop that sells sausage and such can bring in inspected meat by the half or smaller then make the sausage for pubic sale.
with their animal business being people who have them kill cut and wrap their animal.

it has been amazing what once was hard and fast this has to happen onsite inspections and licensing they just let slide .
Well if you can let is slide for months why do you ever need to do it again?

some friends have a cafe , they moved locations and were due for inspection the end of march right after covid shut everything down.
finally end of May were able to get a virtual inspection , they walked the inspector around with a smart phone so he could see the things he wanted to see and they were open to make and sell food to the public. heck if thats all it took they could have been doing drive up service weeks earlier.

in WI they were issuing drivers licenses without a road test during "safer at home".

all sorts of things that were hard and fast you need this inspection , we need to see the inside of your house for tax assessment ect. all got tossed

be interesting to see my tax bill this winter , we were up for in home tax assessment end of march , they decided they could do drive by assessments instead.

I don't think I have ever seen heavy boars over 7 cents a pound. 1-5 cents has been average over the last 4-5 years at our local livestock market.
