Splake are fish made just for anglers. Make them in a hatchery, plant them into a water body that will support them and allow them to grow(cold clean water with food) and permit access for fishermen to remove them before they get old and die.

Yep as they can't reproduce.

Many moons ago, NYS DEC delved in splake production. As mentioned male brook trout X with female lake trout, resulting in supposed hybrid. The pictured fish could have been the result of using a Timiscumi strain of brook trout. A very colorful strain of trout . FYI ,10 yrs. as a fish stripper . Note not the same as Chippendale . LOL Tut

It is normal in late Sept- through into November. The brilliantly color up for their fall spawn (although they are infertile), they go through the motions in fall and that's when we go after them.
In the summer months they look more like a lake trout than a brookie.

RV that is sure a nice specimen of a fish.
Those fall trips are sure nice.
We call the fur-fin-feather-fun runs. Black powder for deer, fishing the shore line, and waterfowling as you go along, and what is not fun about that.

Isn’t a Brook trout ...a splake and a laker combo?

No. I brook trout is natural, it's actually a type of char.

We generally skip the fur part, but ruffed grouse don't stand a chance when we are getting into the trout lakes in the fall.
Fall is awesome.

I personally prefer catching huge pike in the spring but my kids will chase splake. They look more like a laker now and the brilliant colour time is when they catch me eye and I try catch them. This time of year the average one looks like this. [Linked Image]

We have a lake about 5 miles from here that has splake in it. I've never seen one as brilliant colored as that one though.

That lake also has tiger trout in it. That's a mix of lake trout and brown trout

We’ve got tigers in quite a few lakes too.

They’re a brook/brown cross.

No cutthroats like in Wy. My kids tried catch some last summer down there in WY but came up with a bunch of rainbows instead.
