Yah run I have a little better than 120 trees l put in 18 years ago. Just put in 200 more 4years ago and grafted them this year.
Lee they are this last years crop. I held back 1000lbs in cold storage for a couple markets that want them to stock when they start selling peaches and produce in July. You can look at the color of pecans and tell if they have been taken care of or not. Kind of like maple syrup l guess. The lighter color the kernel is, the better tasting it is. Most pecans you buy at grocery stores or Wally World come from Mexico and are 2-3 years old. They probably weren't stored in the shell at 0 degrees. They don't have much taste and are dark brown in color. I have 5-6 chest freezers that I can store 3-4 thousand pounds in if I need to.

I love pecans. My mom makes chocolate chip cookies with pecans in. Best cookie I ever had!!

We do some from time to time, roasted with brown sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla. Them be hard on a fat man that's supposed to be on a diet.

Miss them up here in AK. No nuts at all up here. Miss boiled peanuts too. We get kinfolk to send us pecans in the mail, have to order canned boiled peanuts.

Ha ha, cracker. I bet boiled peanuts in a can would rate right there with three year old Mex pecans! lol

Well we can now see who the rich trappers are, lol. Pecan trees are the go to investment down here. Even our larger plantations are planting and buying up land just for pecans.

It's definitely a investment Wanna Be. Lol Not a lot of people can stand to wait 10-15 years for any return of money. Better have a steady job while you're waiting.

Lee and with grapes vines after 35 years vines you cant keep up with all the wine it produces. Had an Italian client that his produced 400 gallons and @ 85 years old it drove him nuts producing but not drinking it all. RIP old fellow with the pandemic they could not celebrate drinking et toasting it all at his funeral , but there will be a day

If you have 300+ pecans trees, I think you're doing ok!!

Besides black walnut, about the only nut tree that can take zone 4 where I live are butternuts (ok, there's some hazel nuts but they don't excite me). I snuck in a couple butternuts seedlings a couple of years after we built this house in 2008 and planted them down by my creeklet. The wife was majorly against planting any black walnuts! I think the butternuts need a better soil than what is down there (backfill on top of clay) and have only reached about 5 feet tall by this year, a couple years I don't think they grew at all. They actually look pretty healthy this year and I probably need to pound in a couple of those tree spike fertilizer sticks. I don't think I'll be here or even live long enough to see any nuts but maybe the next owners will, and the shade. The wetland condition of the creeklet has sort of crept up hill as sediment from up house construction over the years has filled in the channel somewhat. The little watershed is built out now and unless there's still some soil run off from the cropland uphill, the sediment fill should stop. The former prairie really doesn't like trees all that much...
