Freeze-out kills them here occasionally-not the ones in the bush-the decorative lawn ones. A couple years ago the harsh winter killed a lot of small cedars, and I lost both of my juniper bushes in front that had been growing since the house was built in '76. Road salt will kill them along hi ways also.

Pine bark beetle is killing them by the millions in the mountain states. I think they're working their way east.

Yeah, it looks like someone dyed that one a rusty-red color.

Looks like a white pine which likely means white pine blister rust. You can work to lessen the effects of it, lots of information on the web about that.

If I saw that here I would think it had bag worms. We have had an asian beetle that was killing pine trees in our county several years ago. It got maybe 5% of the trees but never got the rest - I don't know why it stopped. Those had obvious 3/8" holes all around the trunk of the tree.

Here is what I can tell you about dying trees. It is never just one thing which kills them. Pine trees have natural defenses for just about anything, including nematodes, pine bark beetles, rust, etc. What makes them vulnerable to these type of pests/diseases is stress caused by poor soil, drought, too wet, overcrowding, salt from the road or from extreme high tides. Think about a tree which has been healthy for many years, then dies from whatever. As a tree grows, the roots spread further and further away. If the soil is significantly different at a specific distance away from the tree, it can result in the tree going into stress, and become vulnerable to whatever pest/disease which may be blowing through. I have seen entire stands of coastal pines completely decimated by pine bark beetles. Why? A freak High tide from the previous year stressed them out to the point that they could not throw the beetle out with their natural defense which is pine pitch. The next year, new pines came up from seed and now every thing was just as it was prior to the high tide/ beetle invasion.

It’s white pine. Duckie has some good information which probably applies to your situation more than anyone else’s.
