Well I have decided to cut back chains on my Coyote and Cat traps. They have been in the 3 - 4 ft lengths with 3-4 swivels and a JC Connor shock spring.I am going to cut back to 18". I have noticed the lunging causes damage to the foot. My question is do you see any advantage for the shock spring on the shorter chain.Does it have any impact on pumping the stake?

And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgement!

I run short chains, and have found they get in my way and make the trap harder to bed.
YMMV.

When life gets me down..... you know hunting/trapping season is closed.

Have never used shock springs but I do run short chains 18" or less with at least 3 swivel points (at trap, at midchain, and at stake attachment) and this works well for me.
I double stake or if I have to carry equipment far into a section for those locations I use an earth anchor on 20"-22" of cable.
I know pros and cons of long vs short chains have been discussed on here at great length, and probably same with shock springs too.
I have a hard enough time cleaning frozen mud from traps and swivels, cant imagine a frozen balled up shock spring would even work with freeze thaw in mid-january here.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.
