Most of the products that kill clover are some formulation of 2,4-D. 2,4-D kills broad leaf weeds but not grasses if applied at the rate on the label. You can seed grass 2 weeks after spraying. Best time to seed with grass is in the fall. Spray 2 weeks before seeding time. And, grass is difficult to grow unless it has good soil contact and plenty of water.

I don't have irrigation so growing grass is going to depend on rain - which is a crap shoot. I'll keep my clover because it's just as green as grass and isn't a fragile.

Not sure, peeker. But it is easy for me to knock clover back with a John Deere belly mower. It seems once it gets dry, fescue maybe able to get the upper hand.

2-4-d won't kill clover, just burns it back. Use Grazon Next. Spray late one the fall and I will almost guarantee that next spring it will be gone. There are several formulations of Grazon. Some are restricted use and require a license to buy. The Next formulation is not restricted, at least not here in Nebr. I bought mine from an spray pilot, any farm coop that deals in fertilizer and chemicals should have it.

2,4-D is a broadleaf herbicide developed in the 1940's. It is commonly available at any farm store, Tractor Supply, etc.

I was looking around online and see differing opinions on whether 2-4-D works on clover.

How much 2-4-D per gallon would you mix to use a handheld or backpack sprayer? Once again the interwebs are full of opinions the most helpful being the whiney "call a professional...your not licensed to spray."

Why do you need to do it on cooler days?

If you want to get rid of clover 2,4d is not very effective. If you want to keep your clover 2,4d will kill it every time.

One important factor is what type of grass is your lawn?

My lawn is a bit of a mix.

It has weeds, clover, green grass and now that it stinkin' hot it also has brown grass.

I'm not really into lawns if you couldn't tell.

I appreciate all the comments. For now she has not mentioned anything for a few days so I am going to let it ride.

I got myself a seniors' GPS.
Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination,
it tells me why I wanted to go there.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but you may be interested in the history of clover in the lawn.
It was considered desirable until they invented chemicals to sell to kill it.
That's when it was branded a weed, about 60 years ago by companies that sell lawn care products today.

My wife hates Creeping Charley. Then we took a horticulture class together. Creeping Charley and clover are great for pollinators. Now she’s torn between feeding bees and seeing ground cover she doesn’t like. I think the bees will win this one

If your wife wants the clover gone, let HER do the research and do the work to get rid of it. She might decide to leave it alone

Tell her that you treated it but it takes about 4 months for the stuff to work. Come November it will all be gone until next spring. Then next July you can tell her you will treat the yard again and in 4 months it will be gone again.

I will send you my consulting bill in the mail!!!!
