Lethal sets is the way to go,Live holding devices are inefficient and need to be checked every day out of consideration for the animal. For lethal sets,in fall every 2 - 3 days,in winter-5-7 days is fine. Once the animals are frozen rock hard not much bothers them. Checking traps and snares every day is counterproductive-too much activity all the time alters the animals movements, plus you need to give the sets time to work or your just wasting time checking mostly empty sets.

One other thing-in my experience any damage from animals will be from their own kind before they have time to freeze. This is not uncommon with lynx and wolves. Both are animals that travel in family groups and are not adverse to cannibalization. The way we remedy that is to gang set to catch multiple animals.A caught animal is often a call for others and a savvy trapper takes advantage of that by gang setting.

I would check my snares, and other sets, every 3-4 days throughout the season. When checking bait stations I would walk thru by the same route each time checking from a distance. I would only walk up to a snare if it needed adjustment or had made a catch. And YES lynx, wolves and coyotes can be very cannibalistic.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

WE have a 24 hour check here. So I like to flag a set with some flanging or some colored snap on cloths pins. That way I can stay back and check to see If the flagging Is down If not I don't go In to check every day. But I will go In and check every snare on the 3rd or 4th day to make sure It hasn't been knocked down. I also gang set these areas.

If you dont start too early 5 days will be fine(if legal).Set heavy and bring bait each time you visit, even if its not much. Dont handle or set new snares if your handling bait. You can handle frozen bait with gloves, and set snares with bare hands. That way you wont get animals avoiding your snares from having bait smells on them.

3-4 days in the beginning, as it slows down i will go once a week. All i use is lethal, unless for some reason it's a beaver job and they want them live.
Let me sugar coat this
