I was gonna make some flat sets for coyote and fox trapping and I was wondering if I should buy red fox gland lure to use with it or will the Katz bro’s 1-800 predator lure work. Basically 1-800 predator lure or buy red fox gland lure.

Read some books- as good as videos are a book written by Charles Dobbins and other trappers approaching his caliber will spell somethings out that can get brushed over in videos. To me, a flat set happens when I have two things- a reason for the critters to be at a spot already and something to make them step where I need them to (think visual Mason). Once those two things are in place there are probably hundreds of scents that can be the cherry on top.

In fact I love flat sets when a change up is needed and if I have been rotating between 3 or 4 of my favorite baits and lures throwing in a flat set between them with something entirely new and something they haven't smelled b4 can get you some of the educated ones.

Some attractors are more effective than others on a flat set.
They should be designed for a bite, lick, pull response for optimal results.
Curiosity and territorial responses are always good, but the more urges you appeal to in the critter, more often = the more critters, you'll catch.

It's like when LL is hungry, and has to "P", and the TV is tuned to his favorite ball game...
I could catch him anywhere in the areas of his living room, bathroom, and fridge.

I think knowing what the animals reaction to a lure or bait and how to use it accordingly is more critical at a flat set where generally speaking you have less control of foot placement compared to a dirt hole. And the best way to know that is test it yourself.

I see Marks plug was taken off by moderator. He and Quite a few others have flat set baits and lures. Get a few catalogs or look up on internet. Most give detailed descriptions of how they work and quite a few tell ingredients. Buy a few and do some testing the rest of the summer. Have fun in the field and learn valuable first hand how they react

Alright sounds like a good plan. I let my dog smell one I don’t know if it even could tell me anything but she smelled it really hard moving her nose around it for a bit then she rolled on the ground (not in it just on the ground) but my dog is dumb and rolls on the ground after you mow the grass so idk of lure had anything to do with it. Also I do know rolling is a bad response. Is my “dog” test a good idea?

Its a starting point and comparing your dog's reaction to wild k-9s reaction will tell you how much you can trust your dog. Dont buy into the rolling thing is all bad, my opinion is the rolling response is one of the strongest and most positive responses to an attractant that you can get. Some of my best lures will get a rolling response if too much is used or used in the wrong way. A lot of the top shelf lure ingredients will get a rolling response if used alone and put were the coyotes can get to it.

Ha- your Wisconsin is showing neighbor. You could blind set me between the kitchen and a good televised rodeo event but you had better set outside or in my office if their isn't anything but a stoopid ball game one.

Oh, and plan on me grabbing some of that flat set lure one of these days.

Leftlane,

I'd bait ya with a brewski and a cute gal and you'd step all over that MB550 pan brother!

Oh, and the afore mentioned flat set lure that was poofed is made with a muskrat base, so it's a bait/lure mix in a sense.

And yes...
I came out with it 18th months prior to R.W. stacking the zillions of doggies.

Just saying.

As was previously mentioned, a lure that triggers a rolling response isnt a bad thing if you put it where he has to work to get it, to roll in. While he is working for it, you have a lot of opportunities to catch him. Tainted muskrat rat glands will do just that.

I can't disagree with a rolling response being a response of high magnitude, but I'd rather not have that at my sets. Boogers are hard enough to get to step on the couple square inches, what with weather, wind, and a host of variables.

I like odds when I trap. In my favor if I can adjust accordingly.
I don't use tainted anything because my non-target catch is too high, and the coyotes get on to you, if you have too many raccoons and grinners dancing around.
That mentioned, I have trapped states (NE, KS) where there are not many "other" things to catch, and that'd be a bit different. Use anything at that point perhaps.
Especially in predator control, where these coyotes are not dumber tomorrow than they are today, we use Wizard of Oz tactics; "These things must be done delicately!"

Keep records. Be conscious of testing bias where you use new goo at new sets and your honey at your honey holes. Have fun! Vary it up.
Thank the Lord we're trappers. Salt of the earth folk!

Blessings,
Mark

“Flats and Posts” has been a reliable one for me. I’d be willing to bet he will talk to you on here or on the phone if you need any specifics. Good luck!
