Theodore Roosevelt noted in his history of the Ohio region, that the Methodist preachers who came over the mountains first sermons were with their fists, in they had to beat up the local bullies in this lawless land. Once that was established, the preachers could be found in various callings from preaching sermons, presiding over hangings, and taking up their guns with parched corn, to ride with their flock on punishing raids against Indians or making war on the Empires of Europe. The American clergy of the revolution and after was one which was active in leading and there was never this suffering at the hands of others unjustly. They were remarkable men who formed America.

Those pastors were definitely another breed. Preach you the Word but knock out your teeth if necessary. I like how pastors of that area had sermons based on current events. Even events of a political nature. I guess that 1954 insertion in the tax code put an end to that.
