When I'm trapping, it's a good time to reflect on many things. Trapping, usually a solitary endeavor, allows for discussions with me, myself, and I most days.
Yesterday was the day, we as America, celebrate our birth as a nation.
"Let Freedom Ring!" as a National theme.
So I was thinking;

Freedom: We're taught that freedom is the ability to act as we wish according to our passions and desires. Do what we want kind of thinking. True?

Yet a fish is free, but it can't walk.

So freedom must not be able to do all things, correct?

We're taught a much better definition of freedom in my current studies, than the one I got in Mr. Hoover's 6th grade public school history class, back in the day.

Freedom: The ability to maintain the uprightness of your character and to act in conformity to it.

In other words,
Freedom is not so much what we are allowed to do.
It's about the objects we are allowed to choose.

Blessings!
Mark

I always think of the words in Joplins song, Bobby McGee.

"Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose"

With this, I feel I've never truly been "free".

You only have power over people so long as you don't take everything away from them. But when you've robbed a man of everything, he's no longer in your power - he's free again.

What is it to be as free a bird. Little birds that can't fly may think of themselves as not being free, and sometimes in searching for freedom they fall from their nest to there demise. While a nest may be confining still not nearly as a shell. I think sometimes when defining freedom considering where we come from gives us a better perception of where we are. Having wings doesn't necessarily guarantee the ability to fly. After all being a pinguin must be like having a weight tying him down and never take to the air. Well I have had my weight removed and perhaps in a little while I too will go to heights unknown to me. While not soaring the heights just yet, I have the hope of attaining the goal or prize not by defying gravity but by the law of grace to contest the law of gravity.

I agree with the above post and would add, FREEDOM HAS A PRICE AND THAT PRICE HAS AND WILL BE PAYED IN BLOOD!

Freedom is about having choices. Yes you can choose to steal or murder but the penalties are severe. In order to live with each other we can not allow those things so no nobody is 100% free.

and yet, a penguin can "fly" through the sea! (ever seen them on National Geographic?); and other birds can't "fly" (at least for very long!) through the water.

so, re-defining our terms/perceptions can indeed make us Free!

I was thinking as I posted this earlier, I've always like a good solid hand shake. Not really sure why.
Covid-19 has promised us as society to limit the objects we are allowed to choose, one being no more hand shakes?

When governance (people elected or unelected) limit our options, and we have less ability to maintain the uprightness of our character and act accordingly, we are less free as a people.

Of course, if someone isn't really concerned about their morality, that theory goes bye-bye.

Covid-19 has been a tragedy for freedom.

I do also. But I'm sure you see folks now who are not.
The owners of the ranch I trap had a big bash July 4th bash at their hunting lodge, and there were all sorts of rules posted for the bash.

#3 on the list - no hand shakes.

Freedom is definitely about the number of choices we have. Our actions, good or bad, are our choice. There is always some consequence to any and all of our actions (thoughts and ideas too).

The coronavirus, and other things, just keep chiseling away at our freedoms.

I miss a good handshake and lots of other freedoms.

I think we should use the word Liberty. It has a positive connotation whereas FREEDOM has a negative connotation.
Freedom FROM

Liberty TO

If you choose to share your genes with someone, you’d better take responsibility. Freedom is the right to make a choice. But if your ‘freedom’ causes strife for someone else, it’s your responsibility to step up and do the right thing.
