Corn can grow 3 inches per day and mostly at night if you set in the field at night when it is calm you can hear it grow and stretch. We had decent moisture before the last 2 weeks so when the heat came crops, bugs and other life has been exploding in growth around here. We were hot and getting dry here but right in my spot we got nearly 2 inches yesterday, last night and today. Six miles away at our son's place a quarter inch so far. My early planted early maturing sweet corn is tasseling. The heat sure hurts the radishes and lettuce. Gets bitter pretty quick in this heat. Soybeans typically start to flower 10-12 days after the longest day of the year, so some of the earlier planted beans with good foliage are flowering here. The beans have doubled in size the last week.

Great fact Bryce. Night growth of corn is very important. One of our biggest yield robbers where we live is it doesn’t cool off at night enough to let the corn truly relax and grow. If you go west just 70 miles the elevation increase drops the night time temperatures dramatically. If we raise 230 under irrigation they can raise 260+ corn. Very important to yield and plant health. Wind is probably our second biggest yield robbers. The wind here in June was brutal. I think it took 1’-2’ off our corn.

Those yield numbers are on the low side, Pawnee. Randy dowdy in Georgia and David Hula in Virginia can do twice those numbers.

Looks like your side of the province is getting some wet conditions this year.

Heard that Alberta is having a sandhill crane season this fall.....are you in a flight corridor there?

Corn here is in tassels and silk already. Could use a shower but not hurting.

The cranes usually fly over here but usually very high. Don't think I've ever seen them in a field where you could plan a hunt. That said, I've had a pair nesting north of me for quite a few years.

You can just see the baby's beak sticking out in front of the bird on the right. They come every year onto this little field just north of the yard.

Run, I think they hit 700 last year but not sure. Simply amazing!! I always ask the question. If they can do that why aren’t they farming most of the state instead of traveling around and getting paid to talk? Not taking anything from 500+ corn I wish that was possible on a large scale, but then again corn would be about $.15/bushel if we could.

Great pictures. Living in the middle of Iowa its sometimes hard to believe there is anything besides corn and beans, or beans and corn.

Run, Not sure who the Good Lord makes work harder out here. Me or the corn? This is a flood field of poly pipe. Poly pipe is unrolled then filled with water and gates punched in. From late May until mid August I change the rows twice a day 7 days a week to keep up on water usage. Here’s some pics showing it and the gates.
