Wife is looking for a new (used) kid and toy hauler. We've narrowed it down to a toyota sequoia and ford expedition. Anyone have any druthers or experience with these? Will be doing some light towing (small camper) on weekends, btw.

I've got the 5.7L in my Tundra. It's got 381hp and drinks gas at a pretty high rate. I routinely tow right near 10,000 lbs with it and also haul a lot of 1,500+ lb loads of firewood. It has no problem at all with that.

But...did I mention it likes gas? LOL

It doesn't sound like you'll be using your new vehicle to do that sort of heavy towing/hauling so it might be a good idea to opt for the smaller, more fuel-efficient engine in the Ford.

Eh...wot?

Mileage will be the same towing if your going to use ut for a toy hauler. Your maitenance and possible repair costs on the EcoBoost are much greater.

If owning under warranty...whatever the wife likes.
If owning out of warranty...Toyota.

After owning a turbo, I'm trying to avoid owning another.

The real world fuel mileage of the 3.5 eco boost is almost identical to a V8. I would go with a Toyota over Ford any day and twice on Sunday.

I have a 3.5 in an Explorer. My son has it in his Expedition. He has pulled a 28' camper all over the eastern half of the country with it, and no problems. I have 43000 miles on mine. He probably has less on his. We are pleased with our fuel mileage. The newer engines have direct injection in the cylinder and the intake manifold, thus no problem with carbon build-up on the intake valve. Not sure what year it changed.

A buddy of mine traded in his Avalance for the 3.5 eco boost. Towing a small camper across the country, he said he was very unhappy with the eco boost and got better mileage with the Avalance (with more power and room).

When towing, check tongue weight. I see a lot of guys far overloading their half tons. Tail waging the dog, headlights pointed to the moon. IMO, anything more than a small utility trailer behind a half ton is dangerous.

Campers are made for 2500s and up (with airbags).

I wish Toyota made one.

I must say the extra hardware of the turbo is a concern, especially on a used vehicle. Currently driving an '05 tundra with 193k miles so i'm leaning toyota, but the mpg concerns me especially if things go bad this nov and gas prices go nutso. Thanks for all the comments. Maybe the smaller 4runner deserves a look.

I’m on my second 3.5 ecoboost truck with 0 issues, but my wife loves here Toyota’s. I would go Sequoia all the way. Toyotas have phenomenal resale. My wife and I both bought vehicles new in 2013 mine an F150 XLT supercew ecoboost $44000 sticker hers was an FJ cruiser $35000 sticker. We both traded in February the trade in on my F150 was $17000 with 90K miles her Toyota FJ trade in was $17500 with 150000 miles. I would have went Toyota myself but she gave me the green light to buy a Raptor smile

Only engine option for the expedition is the ecoboost. At least in the 2016-17 years.

I’ve got the eco boost in my 2016 F150. Perfect combination of the downsides of a V6 and a V8. Not much power but uses the same amount of fuel as a V8 as was mentioned above.

No substitute for cubic inches. I drive a 2019 3500 chevy 6.0 w/4.10 gearing. With an easy foot on the starts and no jackrabbit driving ,I maintain approx. 14.4 back and forth to work. My best tank was on the highway 500 miles 18.2 mpg. Very satisfied for a full 4 door 8' crewcab.

I have a Tundra with 5.7L. 289,000 miles on it, good compression check all cylinders. Toyotas seem to be a bit undersprung, so I have air bags on rear. Phenomenal truck and engine. Made in USA too.

I have the 3.5 Eco and driving 70 mph I get right at 23.5. I have yet to pull with mine. My son has one and he says it pulls real good. I was looking at a 2.7 Eco but went with the 3.5.
