Just passing along an interesting display in the northwest sky this week in Neowise, a comet which actually looks like a comet should with a long tail.

It is located about 30 degrees above the northwest horizon, and becomes visible about 90 minutes after sunset. Find the Big Dipper, and look down and to the right about 30 degrees and you can see the tail. With binos you can see the glowing center. It helps to find it, to use your side vision, where the rods in your eyes gather the most light.

Oh and if you look to the northeast overhead you will see a W which is Cassiopeia. Look southeast at sunset and you will see the big planet. Around 11 pm when the comet appears, you will see a curved little dipper thing in the south which is Scorpio, and what follows that is Sagitarius sitting on he horizon like a big tea pot. The stars have been really pronounced the past months. The Milky Way was spectacular last night.

Went out and got a look at the comet last evening. I saw Kahoutek(?) back in the 70"s too. I tried to see Haley's in 86, but I couldn't find it even though I had a perfect area along the coast of the northern Gulf on a turkey hunt to the Florida panhandle, absolutely no light pollution to wash it out. I'll catch it the next time it slides by!

Below and left of Jupiter you can see Saturn in the SE sky. With a 28 power spotting scope I could see Jupiter's moons and Saturn's rings and had a direct flyover of the ISS. Man that thing hauls the mail ! That was Wednesday night, last night was cloudy, lots of things to see right now. I haven't been able to see the comet yet but I will, think I've been looking to early, and it will get higher in the sky so should be easier to see.

I'm to close to Atlanta to see it. I'm 40 miles south of Atlanta. On a good night I can barely make out polaris.

This should help locate the comet for those with clear skies.

The numbers are the dates.

Quote
"Here's a simple, to the point, easy to use and understand finder chart for comet NEOWISE that was posted down below by Christopher Clifford and was produced by the website "Earth and Sky".

When to observe? As soon as it is dark. (In the evening.)

Where is it? Near the horizon in the northwest."

Here is a pic I took from my family's camp in north-central PA last Friday (7-17-20).
