Here are a couple I made in 1947 or 1948. They still work. A muskrat and coon stretcher.

For cats and coyotes you don't need to plane them down, round the edges and a little sanding works fine. That is with fence pickets, when you sort through them they are all different thicknesses. For any other boards you will have to plane them to make them work, and not worth the effort. I would imagine that if you look around there will be a lot of boards for sale cheap this year.

If there are any Amish mills near you check them out. I’m buying basswood for .35 cents board ft. Does hav to be planed and cut to dimension.

I used the same to make a bunch of them, some of the larger wire has a springiness to it that helps keep the pelt tensoned. I had a store bought on and drew a pattern on a piece of plywood I place nails around the outline of the pattern and used these to shape the stretchers I was making

One thing that make it work right is... if you look close the the holes the wire runs through are on a slight angle. If you drill them straight through the wood as the pelt dries, it will pull the wood up the wires. I know this to be true, because when I made the first one it happened. Being 6 or 7 years old at the time it took me a while to figure this out. The rat stretcher wire was no. 9 wire and it was a bit soft but worked okay. If I was going to use a comparable wire today I would use Political Sign wire. It is about the same diameter wire, but much stiffer than regular no. 9. You should be able to get a bunch of it this year. I have made all sort of things from this wire and it holds up well.

Good luck
