phone (sorry it wouldn't let me have that in the title).

I say 'would' since I know many of you are much older than me (37) and have kids close to my age. I said 'did' since I know there are many on here that are around my age.

I ask this because my daughter asked for one. She didn't ask for one of those things that most of you have, she asked for a flip phone that she can call and text with. She has a bit going for since she asked.

The thing I hate about cell phones is that they have turned most people into instant gratification folks. I can not tell you how many times that I have been talking to some one and their phone beeps and they stop the conversation so they can text back. They act like it is nothing. I can understand looking at it to make sure that someone isn't in danger. But to stop our conversation so they can talk to someone else just seems low. Tells me that I am not as important as the person on their phone. I give them a bunch of you know what and they always blow it off. Must be that I am one of the few that do not have a cell phone.

Ok, rant over. Back to the main question, what is a good age for a kid to have a cell phone?

When they get a job they can buy one and pay the bill themselves.

I didn’t have any of these things growing up and I did just fine(not available anyway). We knew where to be and when. If not, extra chores and an arse whoopin. I finally got one in my 20s as it was cheaper than a land line.

Age 8 nowadays seems reasonable for a first cell phone.

I would say it all depends on the kid, some I would give them one a lot sooner then others because having one is a privilege and not a right like to many kids think it is, my kids were given theirs at 9 because where we lived it was a necessity and we had a long talk about what was and was not proper use and behavior as well as the consequences of not following them

Short story but in the fall and winter I drive a school bus and one day one of the kids had a new cell phone and was showing it to all his friends and anyone else he could, somewhere in all the show and tell he decided to demonstrate how to dial 911 which he did and hung up as soon as it connects, next thing I know the bus is surrounded by several cop cars including 2 state, 4 city and 1 sheriffs, they were not amused

By the way I he kid was 14

As much as I like that idea, it just won't work. Married for 14 years now. There has been no need for my wife to get a job at any point. Live within your means is what we do.

I think we got one for our daughter around 7. Helped keep track of her and tell her to come home. Of course she lost a couple so better get cheap ones. She will also soon learn not to answer if she doesn't want to deal with you!!!

I believe it was 10 or 11 for my boys. Helped me.keep track of them plus after they mastered use of it we got rid of our land line and saved a ton of money each month. Many of the teams started using apps by that time to track games, practices, other communications.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

At our house it was when they started to drive.

IMHO, kids younger than that don't need a cell phone and for sure don't need a smart phone.

Both of my kids got one when they transitioned from elementry school to middle school so probably 11 years old. That's when they started playing sports etc, There are no pay phones for them to use any more.

It is what it is.

We likely won't get them for our kids until they can drive. Kids lives for thousands of years without them, and they'll be fine.

You and I carried pocket knives and other things in our pockets as kids.
Today the phone is the tool of choice. There is an important social aspect if rest of class has one and you dont. Also something to be said about being behind the curve and being technologically illiterate by not keeping up with how to use one. Emergencies, keeping track of them and you. Many positives about having one too.

Boys got a flip phone when they started having ball practice after school. Age 12 or so. Used primarily to let us know when they were done so we could pick them up. Entering HS we let them buy there own smartphones. Wife is the phone police around here. She has access to them at any time and they must be upstairs on the charger at lights out. She has parental locks on the web and some apps. Also have stressed to them the importance of once online forever online so think before anything is posted. Great for seeing where they are at when things are busy at the farm and we’re all going different directions.

PS, also great for keeping track of them when they are out with there GFs. So glad my parents didn’t know where I was 24/7 lol

I'm an absolute expert on all the mistakes you can make with kids and cell phones, brought up 3 through the cell phone boom. I don't no where to start. Maybe this evening when time permits if this thread is still active.

I got myself a seniors' GPS.
Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination,
it tells me why I wanted to go there.
