Although I am that newbe, I thought I would share what I learned:

You need to squish down on the ferrule Sideways, not "sandwiched" if you don't have the tool and are trying to use a vice.

Meaning: Squish it down opposite of the way that looks logical. Stand it on its side, then squish.

I lost a super stake by doing it the wrong way.

If I'm still doing it wrong please tell me. Thank you.

But don't you have to lay the ferrule itself "sideways?"

Are you talking about a double ferrule or a single ferrule? Are you talking about setting It on edge or laying It flat? Don't lay It on edge. Lay It flat and beat the snot out of It.

IMO yes you are doing it wrong. In the case of the ferrule coming apart you did not squish it hard enough. For extra security/holding power cross punch your flatten ferrule with a standard screw driver.

That's not a cable restraint.

Double. Flat is what I had done all this time, then I watched a youtube video about someone doing it the right way and it was from them laying it on its side. Makes a much stronger (looking) square almost.

I think this was it

I can't access that link. But I have closed 1000s of double ferules by laying them flat and beating them closed with my 16oz hammer. Never had one fail yet.

Hello "gcs" Weld an inverted V seam on the edge of your railway iron and you can easily cross punch your ferrules and stops, as shown in previous picture, as the last stage of hamming them.

Does cross indentations hold better then just smashing them flat? Seems like a lot more fooling around.

IMHO yes and it's only one additional hammer strike if you have a ridge welded on your iron as I show in my picture. I have never had a cross punched one come apart which I cannot state about just flatten ferrules.

So If I ground down my cutting edge on my chisel and used It I would be good to go?

I would think so, as long as it,s dull enough it won't cut the ferrule. I should have stated a "dull" invert V bead in my previous post

I have done many thousand, snares, cable restraints, cabled Berkshire cable stakes and slide wires. .All double ferrules were flattened as needed with a 2 pound hammer.
I lay them flat for pounding and have never had one of mine or one of my customers have one fail. I never lay them on their side
Experience will help teach you what works for you. Never have watched a you tube trapping video.

I use an old bottle jack and pound the ferrule on the top of that with a 2 lb maul. The top of the jack is checkered and makes a nice set of imprints on the ferrule have only done 8 to 900 but haven't had one fail yet. Never pounded it sideways. Just my experience.
