Are you talking about the Palisades reservoir?

I'm not from there but have spent a lot of time in that country.Am assuming you are talking about the area rather than the town or reservoir.

Yes, talking about the area. Long story short, my best friend drew an archery elk tag for this area, had lined up to go with another fella who knows and has hunted the area in the past. Now, a month in a half before the trip he’s been preparing for for over a year, the other fella apparently fell off the face of the earth. I normally go with him on all trips, but this year, I have a one month old newborn and a looming harvest that should start around the middle of sept. I was just reaching out to see if anyone had any insight to the area or perhaps would be hunting during that same time frame. He’s a life long law enforcement officer, family man, in peak physical shape. He’s also closer to me than any true blood I have. He works hard to get this time off for a trip of a lifetime for him, I just hate to see it all for nought. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

i spent some time in there when i lived in Blackfoot ID, not sure what ya want to know? it is tough ground to hunt for a young healthy man! only two direction to travel, straight up or straight down. if you can make it to the top ya sure dont want to kill something and have to pack out!

I’ve seen elk fishing that area. Don’t know how tough it would be to hunt, though.

Apparently this tag is good for units 64, 65, and 67.....not 66.

Unit 67 has the most public land about 75% National Forest. Units 64 and 65 have about 25-30% National Forest each. Remainder is private. You can’t hunt on private land in Idaho even if it is not posted without written consent.

Like Grampa trapper said, Macoy Creek and Tin Cup area have a lot of elk and in my opion it is pretty accessible. I hunted a lot worse.

Sorry about coming back late in the game, had to check on a couple things, archery is a bit different on the places most of the elk are compared to our rifle season.
A guy coming out here in sept. to hunt should probably look at the mountains in units 64 and 65. Bit more access and not near as steep.moody creek on out to windy ridge would be a place to start.lots of maps and a guy can get a listen for a bugler.coming out to this country not knowing what to expect is a eye opener for most folks.plan for any kind of weather, could be hot, cold or wet.

If someone has never dealt with an elk size animal before in the heat, then it will amaze them how long it takes to cool one out.
