Wonder if anyone has any input on planters? The brands and models I see most at an affordable price in my area are International 56s,cyclo 400s and John Deere 1240s in 4 row. I would be doing 5-10 acres, conventional, dry fertilizer and would be strictly field corn. I’d be pulling it with a 656 or 574. Anybody have an opinion on any of those planters?

The 1240 looks like mine. It started life as a 4 row,
but it was too wide to wander through my orchard, so i chopped
it down to a 295A, cut almost 7' out.
Youre doing more acreage than i though.
Im sure a decent 1240 would do ya fine.

The 1240 was the precursor to the JD 7000 series which was one of the earliest extremely dependable planters as to up keep, planting the desired plants per acre. Their finger type system was very dependable and very easy to work on and or update. If you find one of those in good condition they would be a good deal. The 1240 is a solid planter as well.

I agree with Bryce. Not a huge color matters guy, But that 1240 is a good planter. That is the one thing john deere does better hands down is there planters.

Thanks for the advice. I kinda thought they were a good machine. The 7000s are still a little pricey around here but I would definitely jump on one if I come across one that’s within my budget.

If you can find an old Buffalo Planter (4600) and pull the front sweeps off you have a 3-point planter that will handle a good amount of residue and give you a good stand. In fact, if you find a 6 row call me and I will buy it..... the mike

I bought a 4 row JD 7000 a few years ago that had all the boxes and cups in good condition for $800. Plant about 30 acres of corn a year in duck lakes. Very dependable. Put new tires and a cylinder on it and had to replace the finger pickups once. Love that little planter.
