I like to hang mine to dry. Once the exterior gets leathery and no longer wet, I milk them. This keeps the blood from running into the container with the oil and contaminating it. Once you collect the clean oil, you don't need to do anything to preserve it.

I lay out the raw cleaned sacs on a series of large door window screens on saw horses. I can dry them in a day or so if conditions are right. I like them dry enough to still work the sacs to squeeze out the oil easily. If you over dry them you will not get as much oil out of them.

I drain the sacs to use the oil in lure formulation, then sell the empty sacks to bigger bait / luremakers.

Paul hit on something I haven’t utilized in a few years....Sac oil and a bit of blood. I mistakenly drained a pile of oil sacs and had some blood in it one year. I usually leave my oil sac container out to settle for a day or two. It got hot and WOW! Talk about a strong smell. I knew I screwed up my sac oil for beaver but had created a different predator smell. But you got to get it deep into hole or at least covered up as it is a “roller of an attractor”.

Has anyone ever ground up frozen oil sac's with the oil still in them? I ground up about a pint of them and let them set for a couple days in my mini fridge in my shed. I siphoned off the watery reddish fluid and added some sodium benzoate. Think they're still worth using for beaver/predators?

I got a predator lure that calls for whole sacs ground up
