I sent a coon hide to the tannery, and am wondering if you think I got my hide back? My hide measured 53 " nose to tail , was 39" long as a buyer measures and was 9" wide at the base. The hide I got back is 44" nose to tail and is 32" long and 7" wide at the base. This is my first tanned hide so I don't know how much shrinkage there should be. I'd like input from someone who has had hides tanned and knows how much shrinkage is normal. I think I should contact the tannery on Monday.

My experience has been that there is considerable shrinkage with commercially tanned hides. I send out beaver every year to Z&L, and the returned tanned pelts are noticeably smaller. I’m 100% sure that I’m getting back my own hides. The coons I’ve had tanned also shrunk up a lot in the tanning process.

Your always going to loose length after tanning because its not stretched out on a board like they were when you sent it.You can stretch it back out if you really wanted to if you wanted to get mounted.

Shrinkage is normal in the tanning process. That is why hides have to be blocked out before they are cut and used to make garments.

20% roughly
Most folks mark their hides with a hole punch or ice pick or something similar to make sure we get the same ones sent returned

If you want to restore it to a larger size it is okay to get the leather wet with a sponge and warm water, and put it back on your stretcher until dry. It will be slightly stiff after it dries but you can fix that by throwing it into a dryer with no heat and a couple of clean tennis shoes.

Thanks for all the great information. I just wasn't expecting that much shrinkage. Also next time I'll mark my hides. Then there won't be any question. Thanks again for the input.
