I would like to get back into archery this year but still deciding on how to pursue, rather still hunting.. climber and public land or nail down some private land and hang a stand..

Looking for ideas, or what you enjoy the most? Maybe even some simple ways you've learned to bag the meat. I wont be baiting though.. will be a busy fall outside of the woods as well but HOPING to have some spare time to hunt and trap. And perhaps, do you hunt the same land you trap on?

Thanks.

I’ve grown up hunting public land my whole life. Never knew it was the cool thing to do till 2 years ago.
Still hunting and sitting in tree stands are the way I hunt.
Season opens August. 31st this year.
I can’t wait!

Archery hunt in Wisconsin for many years. The hard to get deer would go into the marsh. It was all cat tails. I found a tree or I would find a tree out in the marsh then I could hang my stand. To get deer to come by the stand or deviate their regular trail I would take a 2 1/2 foot wide board tie a string on each end to drill a hole first..I would use the board to push down the cat tails and make trails that would come in by the stand on the tree that I was in. I will take trails that were main trails and block them off and leave them to the trails that I made with the board pushing the cat tails down. It would work every year every time. I killed several bucks score 140 or better.

When it comes to any type of hunting it’s always good to have several options. When one spot isn’t producing whether it be from heavy pressure or lack of food source at the time or whatever, you can always hit a more productive area !

Do you perfer a climber or stix? Are climbers too limited in tree selection?

Each has benefits and limitations. I’ve been looking at a tree saddle for hunting

I checked into the treesaddle and thats pretty amazing. What system did you go with? Especially the footwear for climbing?

I haven’t pulled the trigger yet on a saddle, still researching.

Regular boots for climbing, found these to use as opposed to sticks, it is recommended to get the small platform for your feet while standing in the saddle.

Haven’t bought them yet either. But, I’ve heard good things and plan to try them out.

Lock on with sticks. My climber collects dust. More options with sticks. I do plan on getting a saddle soon too.

My climber has been turned into a permanent stand. It depends on tree varieties and locations when it comes to the right stand. If you can find a good food source, start there. If it’s good enough, you’ll end there too.

Be careful using a climber as a permanent stand. Sometimes sun, weather and critters can degrade the integrity of the seat and straps that hold it to the frame

... down here , just go into pine forest and scout until you find a white oak dropping acorns.... the deer sign will usually be there if there are any in the area.... hang the stand on the side that’s best for the wind direction , then draw back and shoot the deer when it comes out lol.

I did real well last year on public land. Did a good big of scouting earlier in the year and was well rewarded, me and some of my friends took real nice deer. The rut and pre rut is when we did the best. We found where the doe's bed and just hunted the out side edges of the think cover going the there food source. [Linked Image]

I use ladder stands it’s a lot easier for me. I have several out and only use them on certain winds.

Them are a nice collection of antlers you got your self. I am getting that one that looks like a mule deer mounted, probably won't kill another like that. Especially off public land.
