I add sand to my dirt but I'll be watching this because the sand I have used wax it does real well at catching water at the bottom of the hole instead of shedding it.

Gopher mound sand works

I use a lot of sand from gopher mounds too. Any sandy type soil will work as far as I know, just make sure it's clean.

Any sand will work. Find the source that is the cheapest. I use sand that comes from a gravel pit, it's washed out of the gravel. Just make sure it's bone dry when waxing. In my opinion, the sand is superior to dirt as it beds so much better and packs good. I use 1lb of wax to 5 gallons of sand.

Does it take more sand than if you used than waxed dirt?

Might take a bit more since it packs in better but then you have a better bedded trap.
