So I made an order from one of the trapping supply places and they threw in a doz free wolf fangs

My question is how much extra cable do you need to allow for loops on the end without me having to find out by trial and error?

Say you want 12" cables should you cut 17" to allow for adequate sized loops and still have 12" of working length or???

Use chain and thank me later, but 18 inches of cable will make a 12 inch anchor. You could use cable at the bottom and chain at the top so you don't have to jack around with the cable sticking up in the trap bed.

Common sense catches alot of fur..

Plan is to use cable with about 6" of chain on top

How do you attach chain to wolf fang and keep it attached?

S hook welded closed?

I have to say I never understood cable then chain. Seems to me it would be more work making one cable and one chain and connecting them just for one anchor. Whats the advantage of having cable on the bottom half instead of just cutting one chain and being done?

The only thing it would alleviate is not having to weld the S-hook but there is no advantage I can see.

It must be twice as hard driving a disposable when using chain versus cable. Never saw the need for chain on any of my disposables. And I was using the so called wolf Fang before they were called wolf Fangs.

I prefer cable with about 4" of chain on top. It cuts down on weight a little versus all chain but still keeps you from dealing with that pesky cable sticking up in the trap bed that seems to happen quite often with disposables and the cable is cheaper than chain so it cuts down a little on cost too.

First, you are not attaching the wolf fang to the chain if you’re putting 6 inches of chain at the top
You are attaching Wolf fang to cable

But, make your top loop of cable through the first link of the chain and close the ferrule.

not anywhere close. Ive used both. If I had to venture a guess I'd say at least 90% of the work is getting the anchor drove in. I feel pretty confident that chain is more durable than cable, thats why we like chain on traps. Ive broke more cable pulling sets than chain. And when I lost a coyote and trap because of cable I switched to chain. Yet to lose a coyote to chain failure. Now if you were cutting them and leaving anchor in the ground I could see using cable, beyond that I seen no advantages to cable and cable and chain seems like twice the work with not enough advantages.

Maybe In your ground but In some of my ground you have to have help to drive In a disposable. And having that anchor end dragging a length of chain along with It has to make driving It a lot harder. 16" of 1/8" cable versus 16" of 3/4" chain has to go In the ground easier. And In frozen ground I can't believe 1/8" cable wouldn't go In easier.
So far I have NEVER had a cable failure. I probably shouldn't have said that since It will probably come back to bite me.

My anchor attached to my cable with 2 stops. The loop end set up wit 2 double ferules. Trap chain hooked to the cable loop with 1/8th" quick link.
For the most part I never pull a disposable. Remove the quick link with the trap and I'm gone. Or just cut the cable loop with my cable cutters.
It works for me.

It was a question in response to his comment about using all chain, so actually in that case you would be attaching chain to wolf fang or other anchor device wink

But I can see I could have worded that better too laugh

I built up six with cable and 6" of chain on top this afternoon.

I have dealt with a piece of stiff cable in the trap bed before, looking to avoid that
