How many wax their mink traps, including conibears? I used to dye and wax but switched to dips because of the speed and ease of application. However as the traps age it seems like they get slower and harder to trip.
I'm thinking of waxing again because I think the trap performance might improve. Any thoughts on waxing over paint or dip applied last year. I'm wondering if wax at around 150 degrees will soften the dip/paint in the minute or two a trap is submerge in it.

I have a shallow pan that I use to wax water traps. I will wax up about two inches and clean notch and trigger if that happens.

I dye and wax my mink traps every year; that is the footholds only.I know it protects them and I believe it makes them faster. I simply use a pocket knife to remove the wax from where the dog meets the pan.
I do not wax conibears, but I do paint them with flat black spray paint I get in Walmart.

I don't wax coibears, although I have in the past. I just paint them. I do wax the legholds.

Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

Dip for me. Slightly bend the dog down to lesson pan tension.
First coon and the wax is gone. 1 or 2 days with wax then the rest of the season its bare.

Duckie, just my opinion here, but wax at 150 degrees is way too cool. What you're after in a mink trap (or any trap, for that matter) is a very thin coat of wax, and that only comes from hot wax and a trap that's left in that wax long enough to get hot its own self. I don't recommend this to anybody on account of liability issues, but what I do personally is get my wax right up to the smoke point and leave the traps submerged in it for a couple minutes before removing them. As far as waxing body-grippers is concerned - NO!!! I tried it long ago and learned my lesson. Paint or dip instead, that's my opinion.

I agree I wax hot and keep them in to where the trap is as hot as the wax. A very thin wax that seems to shine till dry in a few minutes.
